MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT – Tanya

Hello Ladies!

Since our last meeting Lori, Cheryl, Rosalyn and I attended the Northern District spring conference.  It was a wonderful gathering and I can’t wait to share with you the great news that we received.

Thank you to all who participated in getting the blue ribbons pinned and ready for child abuse prevention month.   Together we pinned over 7000 blue ribbons!

Teri and her committee put to together a fantastic Fairy Tale Closet.  Thank you to all of you helped collect dresses, donated items and oversaw such a successful event.

It’s time to clean out the closets and attics for our upcoming Spring Sale.  We will be making the final preparations at this months meeting.  We still need help on Friday and Saturday of the sale.  Please check your calendars, the sign-up sheet will be going around again this meeting.

And finally, in celebration of JWCL’s birthday and our 2002 accomplishments, we will be having cake at our meeting!  See you there!     Tanya

 Membership Message – Michelle

Hi ladies! What an exciting time we are having on the membership front!  It was wonderful to see 15 new faces at our March meeting.  I know several of our prospectives were not able to make that meeting due to conflicts.  We hope to see you at our next meeting!

In addition to seeing new faces, we added three members to the club! Welcome to: Jen, Kim, Jen.  Given the amount of volunteering we have done in the last month with the Fairy Tale Closet, I believe we’ll be adding more crayons to JWCL’s rainbow!

The Membership Committee will be meeting this month to start planning our June Ladies Night Out.  If you have any suggestions for location, let us know!

Please be sure to wear your nametags so we can get names with faces!   Let’s reach out and extend a warm welcome to one & all!

Fairy Tale Closet Terri

First of all, I would like to thank everyone on the prom committee and all the ladies who worked during the Fairy Tale Closet event for all of the many hours it took to plan this great event. We collected over 300 dresses, many shoes, purses and jewelry and had lots of makeup donated. We also received 1 dinner certificate, 1 lunch/brunch certificate, several hairstyling and makeup application certificates, and gift certificates for the outlets that were used as door prizes.  The community has been very generous and businesses who contributed will be thanked individually and in an ad in local papers.  We had 17 girls attend, and all but 1 found a dress of their dreams. All of the girls were treated like "princesses" as they were escorted around finding their dress and accessories, and then were directed to the make up station where they had personalized service on color choices and then were given a make-up bag filled with make-up for their big night. All of the girls were so sweet and appreciative.  Those who worked received many hugs and continuous “thank you’s” from the girls and their parents. We heard a few tell us that "this was a miracle come true", "I look like a princess", etc.  Our leftover dresses will be given to Park View High School and Reston Community Center who both are doing similar events this month. This was a great event and so much fun. It was a very rewarding experience, plus we had a great time getting to know each other a little bit more.

SPRING SALE

Our spring fundraiser, the Spring Sale is less than three weeks away! It will take place on Saturday, April 26th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Douglass Community Center in Leesburg. I need your help!  We still need 4 more people to help on Friday night, April 25th with setting up for the sale. We also need at least 5 more volunteers to work as cashiers during the sale and to tear down after the sale. The following are the hours of the different shifts:

    Friday, April 25th Set Up 6 p.m. to ?

    Saturday, April 26th  First Shift 8 a.m. to 11: 30 a.m.

                                        Second shift 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

                                        Tear Down 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

I know Saturdays can be very busy, so if you can only work an hour or two that’s fine. I will be sending around the sign up sheet at the April meeting.

We are also in need of many items for the rummage sale. Donated items can be dropped off at the Douglass Community Center on Friday, April 25th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The following are items that we will not be able to accept: cribs, car seats, strollers, high chairs, mattresses, sleep sofas, and large appliances. It would be very helpful if club members could price the items that they are donating. This will help to lessen the time spent sorting and pricing during set up. Attached is a price suggestion list that has been used for the Mother’s Sale for the past few years. If you are interested in donating items but are not able to drop them off during set up, please bring them to the April meeting or contact me to make other arrangements.

In addition to the rummage sale, we are renting tables to home based businesses and crafters. We have had 21vendors to sign up! We have room for up to 30 vendors this year. If you or someone you know has a home based business or sells crafts and would be interested in participating in the sale, please contact Amy. Finally, if you took sale flyers at the March meeting, please be sure to start posting them. Please help to spread the word about our sale to your neighbors, friends, co-workers, etc. We are really hoping for a good turn out this year! It should be a fun event!    - Cheryl, Ways and Means Chairman

TREASURER’S REPORT – Susan

Checking as of 3/31/03 is $7,201.99.
Savings as of 01/01/03 is $2,310.

If you owe money for your nametag ($5.25) or membership ($35), you've been given a reprieve!  I won't be at the April meeting, so I'll catch up with you in May.  If you have expenses that need to be reimbursed for and would rather not wait until May, just give me a call and we'll work something out.
Thanks, Susan

 Public Relations

If you saw information about the Fairy Tale Closet in any papers and have not recycled them already, please clip them, with the name of the paper and date.  We want to create a PR file as well as a full Fairy Tale Closet file with all the good press!  Thanks!

 Nominating Committee

The nominating committee has met and all members will be contacted within the next week to find out your interest in a board position.  If you have interest in a particular position, feel free to contact a committee member to express that interest.  There are nine elected positions in the club.  The full slate of officers will be presented at the April 15 meeting.         Tricia is chairing the committee & members are Becca and Lori.  The make up of the committee changed a bit to be in compliance with our bylaws.  If people are interested in being elected into a position, they are not to serve on the nominating committee.

April 24-27th – GFWC Virginia Convention in Richmond – Celebrate our Diversity

Registration deadline is April 15th – Contact Lori if you would like to attend.  This is a wonderful opportunity to see our larger organization in action, make new friends and enjoy a weekend away!  If you can only attend one day, plan on Saturday when the Junior Awards Breakfast and Business Meeting are held starting at 8AM thru the Junior Banquet from 7 to 9PM.

Megan’s Walk is May 17, 2003.  Please sign up to help out!

Great Strides: Taking Steps to Cure CF

Pam is a former Junior Woman’s Club of Loudoun member whose daughter, Megan, suffers from Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Megan’s walk is an annual fundraiser which Pam organizes to raise money for CF research. CF is the number one genetic killer of children and young adults in the United States today! Over 30,000 people suffer from CF. Currently, there is no cure; however, scientists are developing new gene therapy treatments with a hopeful promise for future success.

 Here’s what you can do:

bulletPam needs 8-9 people to help with registering walkers on the morning of the walk (from 7:30 am to 9:00am).
bulletWe also need people to sign up for our team of JWCL walkers. People can work the registration and walk if they want to.  J
bulletThe walk is about 41/2 miles and it starts and finishes at Loudoun County High School. The actual walking starts at 9:00 a.m.
bulletThere will be food and face painting and possibly a petting zoo at the finish line. Families are welcome to participate.
bulletDonations should be collected ahead of time and brought to the registration tables on the day of the walk. Checks may be made payable to the CF Foundation.
bulletI will have brochures and sponsor sheets at the next meeting. I will also have sign up sheets for working the registration and for walking.

To register for the JWCL team before our next meeting, contact Jen or you can register yourself on the JWCL team by following the steps below:
