MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT – Tanya

Hello Ladies!  Hard to believe that spring has sprung and summer is on its way.  Look for several exciting announcements at our May meeting and stay after to celebrate the wonderful accomplishments of our club.  The Nominating Committee has been hard at work and will present the slate of officers for us to vote on at our May meeting.  In June, we’ll install the new board at our Ladies Night Out.  I’d like to thank Cheryl and Amy for a job well done on a successful Spring Sale and to Lori for representing our club at the state convention.  May is always a busy month for our club.  If you haven’t signed up already, please consider helping with Megan’s Walk and Sr. Citizen’s Day.  These are events our club has done for several years and are very rewarding.  See you at our May meeting.

 Membership Message – Michelle

Hi ladies!  It’s hard to believe that the summer is quickly approaching.  The membership team is working to get the details in place for the June Ladies’ Night Out event.  We’ll have more to share on that at the next meeting.  For all of our new members and prospectives, we celebrate the accomplishments of one administration and install a new administration in June.  Rather than having a standard meeting, we have a dinner meeting and a bit of extra fun mixed in!

We are thrilled to see so many new faces at our meetings!  Reminder – it only takes attendance at 3 events to become members!  Congratulations to our newest members!  We were pleased to have Lisa, Beth, Gina, and Tricia join our ‘box of crayons’ at the April meeting!  There are several in line to add to the box next meeting!  Have you asked a friend or neighbor if they would like to join us for an evening?  You never know what they’ll say until you ask!  The more the merrier!  Look forward to seeing you on the 20th!

Good news!  Michelle will be returning to her official duties next meeting!  It’s been fun filling in during her maternity break!

 GFWC Virginia Conference Report

The 96th Annual GFWC Virginia Conference was held in Richmond, VA, April 25th  – 27th.  The meetings proved again to be an enlightening, fun-filled, caffeine rich (due to limited sleep) event!  It is amazing to see the work that the women in this state due in the name of community service and Federation!  We’ll be sharing the awards compilation books with everyone at the meetings!  There are some great project ideas in case we want to try something new!

We learned much about the programs of Easter Seals Virginia and GFWC-VA’s partnership with them.  Camp this year will be handled a bit differently than in years past.  All camps will be held at Camp West in Craig County, Virginia.  We all learned that Camp West is a larger facility and can accommodate all campers.  Camp East is in final selections for a Camp Director.  Rather than try to rush an important decision and potentially provide a camp atmosphere below their standard levels, it was determined that Camp East would not operate this summer.  It is a temporary situation!  Camp East is located near Richmond.  During its time off this summer, the camp will undergo some major maintenance activities such as replacing pipes, fixing the dam, and other necessary items that cannot be done while campers are onsite.

On the business side, two major topics came up.  First of all, all Resolutions, which are the organization’s beliefs – items we stand for, passed as recommended from committee.  Items that changed included: adding a new resolution concerning the fight of terrorism and our need to become more aware of our surroundings and safety measures, support of the teaching profession, and elimination of a couple which were out of date.  I will have the resolutions on hand at the meeting, in the event you are interested in those.  Secondly, a dues increase is being proposed by our international organization, General Federation of Women’s Clubs.  We’ll be discussing this at our meeting.

The weekend was full of great speakers: not only the CEO of Easter Seals, but a former freedom fighter and concentration camp survivor, and a past GFWC-VA President, Millie Brown.  Members of the Junior Executive Board visited with Marjorie Branch, the first Director of Junior Clubs in Virginia.  Her message in response to being invited to dinner was heart wrenching – she recalled her days of Federation work and all that she did to help make the Virginia Juniors what we are today!   Millie gave excellent words of advice and several humorous stories in her address.  She challenged all those in attendance to “Reach for the Stars” and do all that we can to keep our Federation working strong.  She said there is no reason that any one of us cannot be the next club, District or State officer.  There is nothing holding us back but our imaginations and determination!

Ladies, our Federation is alive and well!  We have some issues and need to continue working on our Membership numbers, but there are multitudes of good deeds being done and opportunities for Leadership are abounding!  It was a great weekend to learn more about our organization, renew and develop friendships with clubwomen across our state, and celebrate all of our accomplishments!

More to follow at the meeting – it’s the fun stuff!

 SPRING SALE - Cheryl

Our spring fundraiser, the Spring Sale took place on April 26th at the Douglass Community Center. Overall I believe things went better with the sale this year. During set up on Friday night, we received many donated items from club members and from the community. We had more than enough items to sell at the sale on Saturday. To give you an example of how much stuff we had on Friday night, we had 11 tables over flowing with toys and household goods! On Saturday we definitely had more people to attend the sale this year. We had a steady stream of people coming in on Saturday morning. We ended up selling at least half of the items we received on Friday night. We had 22 vendors this year. The vendors seemed to be satisfied with the event. Many stated that they would be interested in participating again next year.

Overall I am pleased with how the sale went. I do wish that our profit could have been higher. Our profit for this event will be around $500 this year. This fundraiser has many expenses involved with it like the rental fees for Douglass and advertising.  Thanks in large part to the vendor fees all of our expenses will be covered this year. Susan will have a more detailed report in her Treasurer column.

Lastly I would like to thank everyone that participated in the sale. I would especially like to thank Amy for coordinating the vendors. Thank you for all your hard work, Amy. Thanks to the PR committee for all your help. Thank you to everyone that donated items, helped with set up, worked during the sale and helped with tear down after the sale.  It is nice to be in a club where people are willing to step in and lend a hand. You all make my job much easier!

Public Relations – Linda and Misty

At the April meeting, we did a rush order of JWCL club t-shirts to have them in time for the Spring Sale and they turned out wonderful!  The shirts are red with our JWCL text logo on the left front breast and our circle-tree logo on the back, both printed in white.  We’ll be passing around a signup sheet for a second order at the May meeting for those who missed it the first time or for those who would like to order another one.  They seem to run on the small side, so keep that in mind when selecting your size.  Be sure to wear yours at Megan’s Walk and Sr. Citizen Day; Thanks!

 Megan’s Walk

Megan's Walk is May 17th, 2003.  Please sign up to help out.  Great Strides: Taking Steps to Cure CF

Pam is a former Junior Woman’s Club of Loudoun member whose daughter, Megan, suffers from Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Megan’s walk is an annual fundraiser which Pam organizes to raise money for CF research. CF is the number one genetic killer of children and young adults in the United States today! Over 30,000 people suffer from CF. Currently, there is no cure; however, scientists are developing new gene therapy treatments with a hopeful promise for future success.

Here's what you can do:
