A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT, SUSAN

Hello Ladies!   I hope you’re having lots of fun in the sun!  Our theme this year is “Memories”, and I’ve got several to share from our Board Meeting and the General Federation Conference I attended last weekend in Lynchburg, VA.  I can’t wait to meet with you on Tuesday and get started.

First, my thanks to all of the board members for meeting in July to get an early start on our new year.  Your time, ideas, and willingness to serve on the board are much appreciated.  Waterford Fair was at the heart of our discussion.  Please think cold thoughts for the October 3rd weekend so our hot stew will sell, sell, sell!!  Another portion of our meeting was spent on how to get everyone in the club involved in volunteering.  If there’s volunteer work you’re interested in, let a board member know.  We want to be involved in projects that help our community, but we don’t want to be bored or stuck with yucky jobs all the time either!  Pass along your ideas!

The General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Virginia Conference was a fantastic experience.  I got the chance to meet with over 230 members of Women’s Clubs across Virginia.  The focus of the conference was publicity, membership and leadership.  There were excellent speakers for each of these areas.  My favorite was Dr. Valdrie, Dean at Sweet Briar College.  She lifted my spirits on Sunday morning with a hilarious look at leadership.  I also came back from the conference with several ideas on how to get our club known in Loudoun County and how to recruit and retain members.  The General Federation membership target is to “Add 3 in October 2003”.  If you know of anyone interested in the club, please invite them!  Now that I’ve been to a conference, I’ll be pushing you to attend a conference too!  You’ll hear more about conference at our next club meeting.

What a great year we have ahead of us.  Don’t wait for your ship to come in, swim out to it!  Get involved in JWCL, learn about the general federation of our club, and get to know your fellow clubwomen, voice your ideas and opinions and just have fun!    See you on the 19th!   Susan

A MEMBERSHIP MESSAGE FROM MICHELLE, our second vice president

Hello Ladies, Hope you all have been enjoying your summer.  I can hardly believe how quickly the time has passed.  I truly enjoyed our Ladies Night Out in June.  I’d like to thank each of you for your support in electing me to serve another term as Vice President of Membership.   The June initiation brings the total number of new members during the August 2002 – June 2003 term to twenty-two.  My goal as VP will be retention.  It is very important that we make sure as a group that we are meeting the needs of our members.  These needs include volunteer opportunities as well as social opportunities.  If you are interested in working with me to reach the goal of continued growth and strong retention, please consider joining the Membership Committee.

With that in mind, I would like to congratulate all of the new members we initiated at the June meeting.  Congratulations to Lisa, Nicole, Rebecca, Kate, Elena, and Maralyn.  JWCL will truly benefit from your membership, and our community will benefit from your dedication to volunteerism.  I would also like to welcome two prospective members that attended our June meeting, Delores, and Leigh Ann.  These two women will be great assets to JWCL, and we look forward to seeing more of them this fall.

I will be holding a Membership Committee meeting sometime in late September/ early October to make plans for our annual Oktoberfest and the December Ladies Night Out.  This year Oktoberfest is scheduled for the evening of Saturday, October 25 at Great Country Farms in Bluemont, Virginia.  Members and Prospectives, as well as their families, are invited to attend.  Mark your calendars, and watch your e-mail for more details.     See you soon,   Michelle

The treasurer's report from Elinor

The Ways & Means Report from Cheryl and Pam

It’s that time of year again! It’s time to start preparing for “Waterford”, our club’s biggest fundraiser. Each year our club has a food booth at the Waterford Fair. We sell Brunswick stew, corn muffins, baked goods and drinks. This is a very important fundraiser for our club because the money that is raised makes up our operating budget for the next year. Since this is so important financially for the club, this is the only event that we require everyone’s participation in. There are several ways that you can help.

The fair takes place on October 3rd, 4th and 5th. We will need help manning the booth for all three days. The first shift is from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and the second shift is from 1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.  We need at least 6 people per shift. This number includes two Day Chairs who are responsible for the booth on that day. If you have worked Waterford before, please consider being a Day Chair this year. It would be great to have at least one experienced person to act as a Day Chair for each day.

We will also need to have enough corn muffins and baked goods to last for three days. So we ask everyone’s help with baking. Even if you can’t work at the booth that weekend, we would really appreciate your help with baking! The corn muffins are made from a mix. We will be handing out the muffin mix bags at the September meeting,

We will also need help with setting up the booth on Thursday October 2nd.  The time for that is from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.  The time is flexible, but the earlier we get out there the better. We will also need help with tear down after the fair closes on Sunday night.

Waterford can be very busy but it is a lot of fun too! Just ask anyone who has been in club for awhile. Also as an added incentive to work at the fair, you get in for free the day that you work. So you can enjoy the fair before or after your shift.  A sign up sheet will be passed around at the August meeting. If you are unable to attend the August meeting but would like to sign up to work, please contact Pam or myself.

COMMITTEE OPPORTUNITIES

The JWCL has committees to coordinate many of the events that we participate in throughout the year.  Committees are currently being put together for projects such as the Waterford Fair, the Spring Sale, the Fairy Tale Closet, Megan’s Walk, the Race for the Cure, and Senior Citizen’s Day.  Volunteers are also needed to develop new fundraising ideas with the Ways and Means Committee.  Committee sign-up sheets will be passed around at the next meeting.  Please consider joining one of these groups.
