Next Meeting:  Tuesday, September 16th, 7:30 p.m. at the Shenandoah building

No one has been assigned to bring treats so feel free to volunteer J

New Meeting Location:

The Area Agency on Aging has moved and our meeting location has moved with them.  The Agency is now located at 215 Depot Court.  It is approximately across the street from the Tuscarora Mill Restaurant and right next to the Morningside Assisted Living House.  Our meeting will be in the multi-purpose room.  As with the previous location, just tell the guard(s) you’re with JWCL and they will point you in the right direction.  The phone number there is 703-777-0257, but they only answer the phones from 8:30am-5pm.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT, SUSAN

Hello Ladies!    My thanks to everyone who attended the August meeting for being flexible and moving to the upstairs conference room.  Continue to be flexible!  This month we’ll be meeting in the Area Agency on Aging’s new location (see above for meeting location specifics).

Waterford: Are you thinking cold thoughts?  We need clear skies and cold temperatures for the Waterford Fair.  We have had record money making years when the weather is good, but cold.  Regardless of the weather, we need everyone’s help to make this event a success.  As a club, we don’t ask for much, but we do ask that you participate in this event in some way.  We desperately need you to work at the booth.  See the Ways and Means article/email for information on where you can help or call Pam or Cheryl.  You’ve never been to the Waterford Fair???  Have we got a deal for you!  Work a few hours at the stew booth and tour the rest of the fair for free!

Northern District Fall Meeting:  For those of you who are working the booth on Friday or Sunday, you’re Saturday is free to go to the District Meeting.  I know.  That’s a little far fetched, but it’s a great event.  The guest speakers are an accounting firm, to answer all of our 501(c)(3) questions, and an Easter Seal’s Camp family, to tell us about Camp East.  The cost is only $20.00 ($18.00 for lunch and $2.00 for registration).  Let me know by Sept. 16th if you’re interested and we can carpool.  If you have questions for the accounting firm, let me know and I’ll make sure that it’s addressed.

Volunteer Opportunities Committee:  Volunteering our time and energy is what JWCL is all about.  We have lots of opportunities come our way, but without anyone focused on them, good opportunities can slip by unnoticed.  Our club would like some opportunities similar to what we had with Daily Bread.  However, without anyone actively looking, we may never find something similar.  At our last board meeting, the Board decided to try a new committee called the Volunteer Opportunities Committee.  This committee will be chaired by the First Vice President, Teri.  My thanks to Teri for agreeing to give this a try, despite her busy schedule.  Teri outlines the committee in an article below.  I am so excited about us focusing on volunteering!  Please see Teri or me or any of the board members if you’re interested.  There will be a sign-up sheet for this committee at our September 16th meeting.

Keep making club memories!   Susan

A NOTE FROM TERI, FIRST VICE PRESIDENT, ON THE NEW VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES COMMITTEE

A new committee is being formed to pursue and review volunteer opportunities for our club. Since volunteering is our club's primary focus, it is important for us to give back to our community in as many and different ways as possible.  Several members have asked for more and different opportunities to participate in. The committee's purpose would be to collect and research the types of opportunities and decide which ones would be of interest to our club. Once a decision has been made, a sign up sheet for that activity would be passed around at our monthly meeting for club members to sign up.  We hope to find activities that can offer flexible times (days, evenings, weekends), so that the times can be convenient for anyone who may be interested. The goal would be have at least one event per month, in addition to the events we already do on a regular basis. Please talk to Teri at the next meeting or send an email if you are interested in pursuing or coordinating new volunteer opportunities.

A MEMBERSHIP MESSAGE FROM MICHELLE, our second vice president

Dear Members and Prospectives,

Just a brief note to welcome three new prospective members that attended our August meeting, Traci (Tricia’s sister), Ellen, and Valeria.  It is great to see so many new faces each month.  The more active women we have the more we can accomplish.  I look forward to getting to know these three women better, just as I am sure each of you does.

In August we had a sign up for Membership Committee.  I will be passing that sign-up around one more time during this meeting.  If you are interested in being on this committee please let me know.  So far it looks like we will have a great group of women to work with.  I am planning on holding a committee meeting at the end of this month or early in October.  I need some help with Oktoberfest, December Ladies Night Out and some general membership chores.  I will be in touch with a date for this meeting.

Please read the information below about Oktoberfest.  It will be a wonderful opportunity for us to get to know each other better as well as a chance to celebrate our accomplishments.

Last but not least I am planning on sending out secret pal names at the end of this month.  Please let me know by the September meeting date if you are interested in participating.   See you on the 16th!  Michelle

the TREASURER’S REPORT from Elinor

Fall dues are now due. Please pay Elinor by the end of September.  Checks should be made payable to JWCL; cash is always accepted.

aN uPDATE ON WATERFORD from Cheryl and Pam, Ways & Means CO-CHAIRS

The Waterford Fair is coming up very soon. As you may have heard (or may already know), Waterford is our club’s most critical and profitable fundraiser of the year. It is one of the few required activities for club members. Even though there is work involved, it is also a lot of fun! In order for this fundraiser to be successful we need your help! There are two ways that you can help. We still need volunteers to work at the booth, especially on Friday afternoon. We understand that not everyone will be able to work a shift at the fair, but we will need help from everyone in baking corn muffins and baked goods.

Pam and I will be making a short presentation about Waterford at the September club meeting. An informational booklet that contains details about Waterford will be handed out.  Sign up sheets for baked goods and booth volunteers will be passed around. We will also be passing out the muffin mixes. Please make an effort to attend the meeting.  Thank you to everyone who has already signed up to work! Keep your fingers crossed that we have a cool fall weekend at Waterford and sell lots of stew!

If you are unable to attend the September meeting or have any questions, please contact Pam or myself.

nEWS FROM Linda & Misty, Public Relations/Publicity Committee CO-CHAIRS

JWCL t-shirts that were ordered before our summer break are ready!  Since Linda will be on vacation, has graciously offered to bring the shirts to the September meeting so be sure to pick yours up.   Payment is $10.00 and can be made in cash or a check payable to Linda.  Linda has three additional size Large shirts if anyone has not ordered or would like another.

A Public Relations/ Publicity Committee sign-up sheet will be circulated at the September meeting, so be sure to get your name on the list to join Misty and Linda in the upcoming year's activities.

okTOBERFEST

The time has come for our annual family picnic and evening of fun at Great Country Farms in Bluemont, Virginia.  This year JWCL Oktoberfest will be from 4:30 – 9 p.m. on Saturday, October 25.  We will definitely need an opportunity to celebrate our fantastic Waterford year (I am predicting great sales!).  You are welcome to bring dates, husbands, children, parents, and of course invite anyone that you know that might be interested in JWCL membership.  This is a great way to introduce JWCL to a potential member, as well as a chance for your spouse or boyfriend to meet the women with whom you volunteer.

This year’s cost has gone up just a little bit from last year in order to cover tax.  This year adults are $19 per person, children 5 – 8 years of age are $9.50 per person and children 4 and under are free.  Your cost includes the following items:

* Rental of covered barn with picnic tables and tablecloths
* Meal: BBQ sandwiches, three vegetable sides, a potato dish, drinks and dessert (pie)
* Admission to the farm

* Kettle Corn
* Use of facilities at GCF including: petting zoo, three corn mazes, hay slides and play area, pumpkin eating dinosaur, Fishing in the pond, Horseshoes, make-your-own corn husk doll.  Pony rides are $3 per ride and are available before dark.
* Private evening hay ride and pumpkin picking (pumpkins will be $.39/lb. or less)

* Bonfire w/ marshmallow roast (Additional cost of $45 – covered by JWCL)
* Set-up and clean-up

Please plan to sign up at our September meeting, or send me your reservation. Payment is needed prior to that evening’s event if at all possible.  Checks can be made payable to JWCL and either handed to me at the meeting or mailed to me.   If you have any other questions feel free to contact me via e-mail or phone.  Michelle
