A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT, MICHELLE T Summer is almost over and it is time to get back in to a routine. If you are like me this summer passed much too quickly, and I am still unwilling to see it come to an end. As most of you know – and many of you will also have this experience this year – my oldest son starts Kindergarten on August 29th. As excited as I am for him to go to school I am saddened by how quickly our time together at home has gone. I try to focus on what a wonderful experience Kindergarten is for every child. How George’s love of people and enthusiasm for learning is going to be so enriched by the experiences that he has at school. I think about what I want him to get out of this experience, what is more important than how to read or compute – the value of good citizenship, friendship, making the right decisions when confronted with peer pressure: things that the author Robert Fulghum talks about in his article “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten.” (reprinted below for those that want to read it again). You may be thinking, “O.K. Michelle, but what does this have to do with JWCL?” Well as a former teacher and now a mother I have to tell you that I am a true believer that teaching values starts at home. I feel that one of the benefits of my membership in JWCL is that I am able to show my children the value of citizenship and volunteerism. My actions let them know that it is important to express gratitude for all you have been given by giving back. Each of you, whether you have children or not, are doing more than helping your community by volunteering, you are also being good role models for future generations. You are passing on the Golden Rule through your good example. I want to thank you for taking the time to continue a tradition of volunteering and remind you, “when you go out into the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together.” Let’s stick together and Keep Building a stronger community through our efforts this year.
A NOTE FROM ELINOR M, FIRST VICE PRESIDENT
Hi Ladies. Hope everyone is having a relaxing summer! Fall is around the corner and so is our busy season. Consider taking the time to sign up for one of the volunteer opportunities we have. Any time you may be able to give will be appreciated and will make a difference. Be sure to check out the sign-up table at the next meeting.
A MEMBERSHIP MESSAGE FROM HEATHER M, second vice president
A NOTE FROM KATE M & SHANNON L, FUND RAISING CO-CHAIRS
It’s that time of year again! It’s time to start gearing up for “Waterford”, our club’s biggest fundraiser. Each year we have a food concession at the Waterford Fair. We sell Brunswick stew, corn muffins, baked goods and drinks. The money raised at Waterford goes towards the clubs operating budget for the following year. Therefore, please remember that this is one of the very few requirements of membership, and look for the sign-up sheets at the August meeting.
The dates for Waterford are as follows: October 7th, 8th, and 9th. We need booth attendants for all three days, as well as, help setting up/tearing down the booth on Thursday, October 6th, and Sunday, October 9th, respectively. We will also need to have enough corn muffins and baked goods to last for all three (3) days of the fair. So, if you are going to be out of town Columbus Day weekend, this is a terrific way to contribute! The corn muffins are made from a mix, which we will be distributing at the September meeting.
Finally, we are already preparing for our 2nd Annual Holiday Silent Auction. I have been busy soliciting potential businesses this summer and look forward to raising even more money for charity this year! As you may remember our goal last year was $300 and we exceeded that by 500%!! If you have any ideas or places you would like to solicit, please contact me prior to your solicitation. The Silent Auction will be held at the Area Agency on Aging November 15th, from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Stay tuned for more exciting details to follow!
