A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT, MICHELLE T Hello Ladies, Everyone knows the story The Gift of the Magi, by O. Henry. A couple with more love than money goes out to buy each other a gift for Christmas. The adoring husband, Jim, decides to sell his most precious possession, a pocket watch that his grandfather had given him, in order to buy some ornate tortoise shell combs for his wife’s beautiful hair. The loving wife, Della, decides to sell her most precious possession, her hair, in order to buy a gold chain for her husband’s pocket watch. What we as the reader realize, even as we are moved by their sacrifice, is that Della and Jim are rich with love for one another. As the holiday season hurries by I realize how blessed I am to not have to make the kind of sacrifice that Della and Jim had to make. However, their story reminds me of the true reason behind this season, love for mankind. That’s why we do what we do at JWCL. If we were to simplify all our reasons for volunteering it would be that we have a love for mankind and a need to express that love by serving others. I see that passion for your fellow man in each of you throughout the year as we volunteer together in the name of building a better community. When you stir stew or gather auction donations, all the time thinking how much we will be able to help people with the money we raise- you show your love. When you change your schedule in order to deliver meals to our areas home bound seniors, and you take that extra moment to have a brief visit with one of them – you show your love. When you are moved to tears as you gather meals for a family of seven that need a little help from Interfaith in order to survive – you show your love. When you join together and walk through the night supporting each other in remembering loved ones who have been touched by cancer – you show your love. At times we have to sacrifice things in order to find the time to participate in club, but those sacrifices are done because of our love for fellow club members, our community and in a larger sense our love for mankind. Thank you for your gift of service to our community and even more thank you for the gift of love. Your efforts are wonderful reminders of the reason for this season. Have a Blessed and Merry Holiday with your families!
