Loudoun Lady Newsletter GFWC – Virginia, Northern District
January 2005, Newsletter Volume P, Issue 11
Next Meeting: Tuesday, January 18th, 7:30 pm Meeting Location: 215 Depot Court, located down the street from the Tuscarora Mill Restaurant, on the left side, just past the Morningside Assisted Living House. Our meeting will be in the multi-purpose room. The phone number there is 703-777-0257. A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT, MICHELLE T It is amazing to me the affect a “New Year” has on me. I mean what truly is the difference between December 31st and January 1st? Yet every year the turning of the calendar has me wanting to clean out every closet and drawer in my house and make a fresh and organized start. I also plan to tackle those projects that have been nagging at me for the last year or so in addition to making the motivated decision to get in shape, make the most of every day, and take time to enjoy my children. If these resolutions sound familiar to you then you are in good company. Every woman with whom I have spoken since the start of 2005 has wished for time alone in her home to clean a room, to organize a closet, or to start a long-postponed project. If I could harness all the motivation flowing from these women then I might be the first person with enough driving force to actually keep all my new year’s resolutions. If you too are feeling that extra dose of adrenaline pushing you to try new things, take new steps, clear the cobwebs from your life then this is the perfect time to think about your involvement in JWCL. Have you been putting off volunteering on a project because you were strapped for time during the fall? Now you have the time or at least the motivation to try something new. There are lots of activities to choose from; Meals on Wheels, Interfaith Relief, Fairy Tale Closet Committee, Spring Fundraiser Committee, March of Dimes, Meghan’s Walk, or Daffodil Days for the American Cancer Society to name a few. What about taking on a position of leadership in the club? Nominations are just around the corner. Join a committee related to the position in which you are interested. Decide to attend the Spring District meeting (April 2); or really take a risk and join Elinor, Lori and myself for a trip to the GFWC Virginia Conference in Natural Bridge (April 15 -17). I challenge each of you to take a portion of that drive you are feeling this New Year and give it back to your community through your involvement in JWCL. I wish each of you and your family a happy, healthy and prosperous 2005. A NOTE FROM JENNIFER S, FIRST VICE PRESIDENT If you are compiling a report please submit it to Jen S ASAP. The deadline is quickly approaching! Also, we will have a special guest speaker from the March of Dimes at our next meeting. Tina Solomita will be coming to talk to us about helping with the March of Dimes' Walk America. Please volunteer to either help with registration or to be on my team for the walk. It is on May 1st at Ida Lee Park. More info to follow...
A MEMBERSHIP MESSAGE FROM HEATHER M, second vice president Hi Everyone! We are gearing up for our Membership Dessert on February 1! We will be meeting at the Exeter Clubhouse in Leesburg at 7:00. Leah Stanton, a professional organizer, will be speaking and giving us tips on organizing! Party-a-Gogo will also be there with the chocolate fountain! We are expecting to have many guests, so come ready to talk about JWCL and mingle! It's going to be lots of fun! As always, if you have any concerns or know of a member in need, please let me know either by email or by phone. Keep inviting your friends and family members to check us out!
THE TREASURER’S REPORT FROM ELINOR M Please find the Treasurer’s Report attached for 2004. State and district dues are being paid this month. If you have not yet paid your dues please do so by the next meeting.
A NOTE FROM STEPHANIE M, SECRETARY As everyone is certainly aware by this point, the tsunami in Asia on December 26th was completely devastating for a number of countries in that area. Since JWCL (and GFWC as a whole) are not merely focused on the needs of our own community but also on those of greater mankind, we would like to assist financially with the relief effort. I will present a couple of different options/organizations to which our funds could go at the next meeting, but in the meantime it would be wonderful if you ladies would save your change to donate. The board has decided that the club will match our individual donations up to $100. I know that many of you will also have the opportunity to give through other mechanisms – your church, workplace, local businesses, etc. – but this is another way that we can make a small difference for such a desperately needy population. Thank you in advance for your participation!
A THANK YOU FROM LINDA S, PUBLIC RELATIONS CO-CHAIR Interfaith Relief Receives Over 300 Pounds of Fruit! Thank you, thank you to all of our wonderful and generous club members. Thanks to you, our club was able to donate over 300 pounds of fruit to Interfaith Relief in December! The amount collected at our Ladies Nite Out dinner totaled to 230 pounds and an additional 72 pounds was donated on behalf of the board. What an accomplishment! I recently heard on the news that one pound of food was pretty much equivalent to one meal, so just think of how many meals our club helped supplement for families in need right here in our local community! We would like to continue fruit collections at club meetings falling in each month in which we will be working at Interfaith Relief. We have signed up to work this term in months having a 5th Tuesday, so that means we will do collections at our March and May meetings. We’ll send out reminders prior to the meetings. Once again, this effort reinforces what Lori was explaining at our December meeting, that together, we can really make a difference…Thanks again to all of you.
AND ANOTHER THANK YOU FROM JENNIFER M, NEWSLETTER EDITOR I just wanted to once again say thank you to everyone that has offered to help with Meals on Wheels! We still have two open dates in February, the 9th and 23rd. The sign up sheet will be at the meeting.
