A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT, MICHELLE  T

Did you know that March is National Women’s History Month?  I am sure that many of you did, but did you know about all of the famous women that have been part of the history of GFWC?  Well let me take the time to introduce you to just a few….

bullet

Jane Cunningham Croly was a pioneering journalist who, under the pen name 'Jennie June', contributed articles to newspapers such as The New York Tribune and The New York Sunday Times. She was one of the first women to write a syndicated column and the first to teach a college journalism course. She founded the Sorosis club for women in 1868 and the Women's Press Club of New York City in 1889. She later organized the General Federation of Women's Clubs.

Julia Ward Howe is best known for authoring the poem "The Battle Hymn of the Republic."  She was a prolific writer and became the first woman inducted to the American Academy of Arts and Letters.  She was a leader in the suffrage movement and a respected lecturer for numerous causes.  She helped organize the New England Woman's Club in 1868 and served as the President of the Massachusetts Federation of Women's Club.

bullet

Jane Addams founded Hull House, a settlement house in Chicago which served as a model for the social reform movement of the Progressive Era.  She was a vocal advocate for working women and child labor laws.  She was also a leader in the suffrage movement and helped to establish the International League for Peace and Freedom.  She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931.  Addams was an active member of the Chicago Women's Club and served as Chairman of the GFWC Committee on Child Labor in the early 1900's.

bullet

Mary Belle King Sherman was known as the "National Park Lady" because of her dedication to the preservation of America's scenic beauty.  She aided in the creation of the National Park Service in 1916 and helped to establish six national parks.  Sherman served as GFWC President from 1924-28 and encouraged clubwomen to pursue conservation efforts in their areas.

bullet

Eleanor Roosevelt was a first lady, social reformer, columnist, teacher, and political activist.  She was a tireless advocate for the poor and disadvantaged and exercised her influence as a speaker and writer.   She also served on the first U.S. delegation to the United Nations and drafted the Declaration of Human Rights while chairing the Human Rights Commission for that body.  She was a active member of the Chautauqua Women's Club in New York and maintained strong ties with the Federation throughout her years as First Lady.  She spoke at several GFWC events and graciously entertained GFWC officers at the White House.

bullet

Margaret Chase Smith served as a state representative or senator for a total of 33 years (1940-1973), and was the first woman elected to both Houses of Congress.  She was an active member of the Skowhegan, Maine Sorosis and became president of the club at age 25.  In 1964, she became the first woman to campaign for the presidential nomination  of a major political party.

So as a member of the Junior Woman’s Club of Loudoun you are among good company.  You too are part of the contributions women make to our nation and our world on a daily basis.  If you want to learn more about the history and current happenings of GFWC then join me in attending either our District meeting on April 2 or the state conference April 15 – 17.  Look for more information later in the newsletter.  I hope to see each of you at our March meeting.

Interfaith Donation:  Our next Interfaith work day is Tuesday, March 29.  We would like to make another donation of canned fruit and juice on that day.  Please bring your contribution to the March meeting, and Elinor will deliver it when she works on the 29th.   Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Spring District Meeting and State Convention It is time to register for the Spring Northern District Meeting and the State Convention.  I am including all information below. If you plan to attend either event please let me know by our next meeting date, March 15.  The cost for the District meeting is $22 and the cost for the Convention is $136 (not including hotel).  If you plan to attend these meetings I will need a check for your fees at the March meeting.   Feel free to call me or e-mail me if you have any questions.

a NOTE from Kate M and Pam S, FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE  Co-CHAIRS

ONLY 6 WEEKS TO GO!! We are counting down the days to the JWCL first ever lemonade concession booth. We will be one of the few food concession booths to set up at the Spring Antiques Show at Morven Park so we are anticipating an overflowing cash box. The dates of this wonderfully exciting event are April 23 and 24th.   Please double check your calendars and sign up to work a shift that weekend.   We have a serious lack of help on Sunday afternoon from 1:30pm - 6pm.   If you can not make it to Morven Park that weekend but would like to help, we'll be selling baked goods too.  We will have the list of items we are planning to sell at our next club meeting.  See you then!

A MESSAGE FROM SUSAN B, BOARD MEMBER AT LARGE

MADD checkpoint on St. Patrick's Day!  I'll be working this event and would love to have some company.  It's a work night, so I won't be staying long.  A great opportunity to try it out.  It starts at 9pm at Ashburn Burger King (the one at the intersection of Ashburn Blvd and Farmwell Station Rd).  We'll leave at 9:45 to go to the checkpoint site.  BAKED GOODS are needed.  Thanks to Kate and Stephanie for volunteering baked goods.  We can use more!  You can bring them to the Tuesday meeting or call me.

Spring outing - Road trip to headquarters!  Our headquarters are located right in our own back yard and I've never even been there!  Have you?  The date isn't cast in stone, but I'm looking at Sunday, May 15th.  We'd meet somewhere around Leesburg after 1pm, then carpool to D.C.  Stopping on our way home for tea/goodies/whatever.  It's our president's home and not normally open on Sundays.  So, I'm still trying to get permission, but when I talked to the office today, they sounded hopeful.  Let me know if you're interested.

A NOTE FROM REBECCA M

What Is Relay?   Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society's signature activity. It offers everyone in a community a chance to participate in the fight against cancer. Teams of people camp out at a local high school (in our case, Heritage HS), park or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. This event will run from 1:00pm on June 4th to 8:00am on June 5th.

Because Relay For Life is a community gathering rather than an athletic event, anyone and everyone can participate. Teams form from businesses, clubs, families, friends, hospitals, churches, schools, and service organizations. Team members share a common purpose — to support the American Cancer Society’s mission.  Relay For Life also raises funds. Teams solicit donations, have garage sales, hold car washes, and more.

JWCL is looking to put together a team of 10 to 15 people that would like to participate in this event.  For those of you who have never participated, it is a moving and very fun event!  Remember, you don't need to be there for the entire time.  If you can only be there for a couple of hours, we would love to have you come out!  More information will be forthcoming at the next meeting, so please consider marking your calendars and joining us for this very special event!
