A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT, MICHELLE  T

Hi Ladies,

I want to congratulate every one of you the numerous awards we received this year at the Northern District Meeting and at the Spring GFWC Virginia Convention.  While none of us is a member of JWCL in order to receive awards, it is nice to be recognized for all the good work that we do in our community and abroad.  As you will see when you read the report below, we swept the Northern District Awards.  We were judged against all of the General and Junior clubs in each category… so there was a lot of competition.  You will also find the statistics of hours/projects/ money donated for JWCL, Northern District, and GFWC VA.  It is amazing to see how our work when coupled with that of the other clubs in Virginia has an incredibly positive affect on our state, our nation and our world.  Being part of something larger helps each activity we participate in have a greater impact on society.

While all the awards were gratifying what I was most proud of was the fact we were recognized as Junior Club of the Year for the state of Virginia.  This award is presented to the “Junior Club whose members most exemplify that wonderful spirit of fellowship, which is so much a part of the Junior experience.  This award is intended to recognize the club whose members are going above and beyond what is expected of them and who go that extra mile for their fellow clubwomen.”   Some of the activities that were included in our report were our Ladies Nights Out, Oktoberfest, Pot and Bead Social, and JWCL Dinners.  I think however, it was two stories in particular that helped us win this award.  Our show of support to Brenda S. by donating $250 to Fidos for Freedom and our “Spare Change” collection of over $800 for Teresa R’s husband’s airfare to accompany her to her treatment at a Cancer Center in Chicago.  The saying “Charity starts at Home” is a reality for JWCL.  I am so proud to be part of a group of women that not only gives back to their community, but also to each other in the spirit of fellowship.  It is that fellowship and friendship which makes our bond strong and enables us to do all of the good work that we do.  Thank you for your friendship and for your commitment to JWCL.

Nominating Committee presents the slate officers for 2005-2006

President:  Michelle T.     Michelle currently serves as President of JWCL.  She joined JWCL in June of 2001.  In January of 2002 she stepped into the position of Second Vice President and was honored to serve as Second VP until June of 2004.  During her time at JWCL she served as a Day Chair for Waterford for the past four years, coordinated a successful Membership Dessert in January of 2003, and participated in many other events such as meals on wheels, Interfaith and Holiday Coalition.  With the help of her committee, and the membership at large, JWCL increased in membership by 75% during her term as Second VP.  As president she has been pleased to see the addition of many new volunteer opportunities and leadership positions in JWCL.  The thing Michelle is most pleased with during her term as president is the club being honored as GFWC VA Junior Club of the Year for 2004.  She shares this accomplishment with Susan, past president, and with every member of the club that works to make JWCL an integral part of our community.  Michelle also states that she is most proud of being a wife and a mother. " I hope that through my work with JWCL I will set an example to my children of the importance of giving back to your community."

1st Vice President:  Elinor M.   I have had the pleasure of serving as the JWCL treasurer for the past 2 years.  I am currently serving the Northern District as the Junior Secretary/Treasurer.  I am the mother of 2 daughters and love being their soccer mom. I work as the accounts coordinator and patient manager for a chiropractic office. I look forward to serving as the club's first vice president.

2nd Vice President:  Heather M.    Heather has been a member of JWCL since September of 2002.  She is currently the 2nd VP of Membership and has been involved in planning several events.  Heather stays at home with her daughter.  She also enjoys woodworking, sewing and doing crafts.

Secretary:  Lea W.        Lea is a Cardiac and Arrhythmia registered nurse.  She graduated from the University of Michigan and is a graduate student at GMU.  She is a mother of two girls, and she married her husband in 1998.  She moved from Minnesota to Virginia in 2000 and is currently living in and loving Leesburg.  Other interests include shopping, interior decorating and traveling.  She is interested in being Secretary for JWCL to solidify her commitment to club while getting to know fellow club and board members more closely.

Treasurer:  Amy H.     Amy has been a member of JWCL since June 2001.  Although working at a very demanding career as a consultant in human and organizational performance improvement, Amy found a sense of accomplishment in participating in JWCL activities and enjoyed meeting and volunteering with a cadre of very talented women over the last few years.  Now, as a stay at home mother to 1 year old son, Amy is happy to have more time to commit to club activities and looks forward to serving in a role on the Board.  Amy's undergraduate degree in accounting will certainly come in handy in taking on responsibilities as Treasurer. Amy has lived in Leesburg with husband since 1997, enjoys sewing, designing window treatments and gardening.....and looooves chocolate.

Newsletter:  Jennifer M.   Jennifer joined JWCL in March of 2003 and says she has "thoroughly enjoyed the past 2 years that I have been involved with the club.  I have met so many great women and have been able to participate in a variety of events.  I am really looking forward to the opportunity to be on the Board again for the 2005/06 year.”  Jennifer got the club involved with the Meals on Wheels volunteer program and is the main contact person for that.  She is also coordinating the Cake Walk for Senior Citizen Day this year.  She is a full time mom of her two small children.

Fund Raising Co-Chairs:  Kate M. & Shannon L.              Kate has been a member of JWCL since June 2003 and has taken part in and enjoyed many club activities since joining.  She is currently co-chair of the fundraising committee and so has gained experience helping to organize and plan club events such as Waterford, the Silent Auction and the Lemonade Concession booth.    Kate is also mother to 3 children and  spends most of her time doing 1st grade homework and kindergarten projects so getting away for a few hours here and there is precious.      Shannon joined JWCL in December 2004, and has found her volunteer experience to be very rewarding.  She has always believed in the importance of giving back to the community.  She has been involved in Waterford, Silent Auction, The Fairy Tale Closet, Morven Park Lemonade Concession, March of Dimes Walk, Meals on Wheels, as well as, several other events.  Formerly a Business Development Manager, Shannon is enjoying her Leave of Absence, and spending time with her husband and their two beagles.  She is looking forward to serving on the board as Fundraising Co-Chair with Kate.

Publicity Co-Chairs:  Jennifer S. & Pam S.         Jennifer joined JWCL in March of 2003.  She is the Director of the Northern Virginia Perinatal Council, a health educator and nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Fairfax Hospital.  She has been the newsletter editor and most recently 1st Vice President.  Jennifer helped JWCL submit outstanding reporting for our club which was evident by the many awards we received at convention.  She also worked with Michelle to restructure JWCL into Department Chairs which are closely aligned with GFWC reporting.  This provides JWCL with more opportunities for club members to serve and make even more use of their talents.  It also makes for easier end of the year reporting.         Pam has been a member of JWCL since May of 2001.   She has been active in many areas of club including coordinating Sr. Citizen's Day, Waterford, Spring Sale and several other fundraising events.  Pam established and maintains our current web site.  She has served on the board as Secretary (2002-03) and as Fund Raising Co-Chair (2003-05).  In addition to her volunteer work, Pam works part-time for SAIC as a Process Improvement Consultant.  Pam has lived in Leesburg since 1995 with her husband and two daughters.

Board Member at Large:  Stephanie M.    Stephanie joined JWCL in the fall of 2002 and has served as club Secretary for two years.  She has been involved in all major club activities, including “day chairing” at Waterford Fair.  Formerly an event planner for a local winery, Stephanie is enjoying the life of a stay-at-home mom with her two-year-old and six-month-old.  Stephanie also enjoys participating on the steering committee of a local MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) chapter and loves to travel whenever the opportunity arises!

A MESSAGE FROM SUSAN, BOARD MEMBER AT LARGE

I just wanted to extend a special thank you to the nominating committee….. Erin, Lori and Jackie. You all did a great job!

Also…….please note that the outing to headquarters this weekend has been cancelled.  Stay tuned as it will be rescheduled for sometime in the early fall.

A NOTE FROM JENNIFER M., NEWSLETTER EDITOR

Don’t forget that Senior Citizen Day, more importantly the Cake Walk is on May 27th.  (You know those Seniors haven’t forgotten!)  For those of you that are volunteering to make goodies, there will be an e-mail coming out soon will further details.  For those of you that will be helping at the event, the cake walk will begin at 1:00pm at JR Festival Lakes in Leesburg.

Once again, thank you to all those that help with Meals on Wheels.  I will have the sign up sheet at the meeting for the summer months, July and August.  If you cannot make the meeting but would like to volunteer, please e-mail me.

FAIRY TALE CLOSET 2005 RECAP FROM TERI H.

What a great time we had!  Once again, we had another wonderful Fairy Tale Closet event.  For those of you who were not at the meeting last month, here are some stats:

* We collected over 425 dresses

* 86 confirmed girls attended

* Girls from 17 different schools attended, some from over an hour away from Loudoun - word about the event must really be getting out there!

* We collected 51 gift certificates from local businesses for dinners, lunches, hairstyling, manicures, and make-up application - for a value of $6370!

The Loudoun Times sent a photographer to the event to take pictures, and one was printed that week in the paper.  This past Sunday, our thank you ad to the community and the businesses who contributed ran in the Loudoun section of the Washington Post.  We will be sending a copy of the ad and thank you notes to each business.  Our remaining dresses were given to Compassion of Hope Church in Webster Springs, WV again. They were very excited to receive them again.  I am sure we will be hearing about their event soon.  I have a few pictures that were taken at our event, so I will pass them around at the next meeting.
