A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT, MICHELLE T

Hello Ladies –  I hope this newsletter finds each of you enjoying fall.  October is always such a busy month around here, and I am sure that most of you can relate.  This morning as I drove home from the gym I was looking for inspiration for this month’s newsletter.  Passing through Leesburg I started to notice a theme showing up in all of the shop windows.  No it was not ghosts, goblins or jack-o-lanterns, although one store had painted their pumpkins pink with white polka dots, it was National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Every store I passed seemed to have a plethora of pink products.  I caught myself thinking, enough… we know, we’ve heard, we’re aware… and then a little voice in my head said, “So when is the last time you did your breast self exam?”( A good site for information on breast self exams http://imaginis.com/breasthealth/bse.asp )  If I am honest I will tell you that just last week while I was listening to the Today Show I found out that there is a recommendation that women get a baseline mammogram at 35, a milestone that I celebrated in June.  Of course it didn’t take long for my train of thought to lead me right to Teresa R, a former member of JWCL who lost her battle with breast cancer last spring.  I thought how can I honor her?   Hence this article is dedicated to Teresa with the hope that each of you will stop, read and take action to ensure your health.  Personally, I plan to mark my calendar with a reminder to perform a breast self exam each month as well as talk to my doctor about getting that base line mammogram. What action will you take to honor the women that you know that have been touched by breast cancer?  The best gift you could give them is taking the steps to protect your own health.

The information below in pink is copied from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation web site:    www.komen.org

REDUCE YOUR RISK

There is no sure way to avoid breast cancer. Some healthy lifestyle choices, however, may help lower the risk of the disease and have the added bonus of cutting the risk of heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer and osteoporosis. Everyone should try to:

bullet Be physically active.
bullet Maintain a healthy weight.
bullet Cut down on “bad” fats (saturated and trans fats), and consume more “good” fats (polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, like olive and canola oil).
bullet Take a daily multivitamin with folic acid (often called folate on nutrition labels).
bullet Limit alcohol intake to less than one alcoholic drink a day. (Regular drinkers should try to get adequate folic acid, either through a multivitamin or rich food sources like oranges, orange juice or fortified breakfast cereals.)
bullet Choose to breastfeed children instead of formula feeding them if possible.

A NOTE FROM ELINOR M, FIRST VICE PRESIDENT

The end of the year is fast approaching and reporting is around the corner.  If you chaired an event this past year a PPS sheet will need to be turned in.  We will go over the PPS sheets at the October meeting and blank copies will be available.

A NOTE FROM KATE M & SHANNON L, FUND RAISING CO-CHAIRS

Waterford:    It was a very wet and sloshy weekend but that didn't stop those die-hard  Waterford Fair goers.  We weren't able to get the stew going on Friday because of the severe downpour, but with a few changes on Saturday morning we were prepared.  I will have the exact numbers to report at Tuesday's meeting but the rain definitely took a toll on our sales.  A special thanks to all those who worked, and tried to work, at the fair in the rather extraordinary conditions.

Silent Auction:   We are really pleased with how the plans for our “Giving Seasons” Silent Auction and Art Exhibition are coming together.  The event is set for November 15th from 7-9 p.m. to be held in our regular meeting room.  We will push back the wall and display the auction items on tables in the center of the room.  Guests can easily move around and see what is available and bid on whatever catches their eye.  We will also have three (3) artists set up throughout the room.  Pieces of their artwork will be displayed and available for sale.  All of the money from the auction items and a portion of the artist’s sales will be donated to the following agreed upon charities: Camp Easter Seals, Healthy Babies Project and Hurricane Katrina Relief.   If art and charitable giving is not reason enough to get out of the house, Party a Go-Go will be there with the chocolate fountain, and because the CD player broke we are bringing in live music!!    We need your support!!  So please plan on attending our “Giving Seasons” Silent Auction & Art Exhibition and spread the word about it among your friends and colleagues.  We wouldn’t even mind if you brought your husband!  At the October meeting, we will have more information on how you can help get the word out about this exciting event.
