A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT, MICHELLE T Hello Ladies – This month I am not going to write my usual article about volunteering, instead I am going to focus on the issue that I am sure is weighing on all our hearts and minds – Hurricane Katrina. Monday night, September 12 your board met to discuss how JWCL could best respond to this crisis. At this time I know that many of you have already given time, items and/or money in effort to be of assistance to all of those affected by this tragic event. Thank you for being the kind of women that step up whenever there is a need. I myself have been overwhelmed with all the information on what we could do and where the needs are. While most of us have the opportunity to get involved through our employers, schools or churches, it is still important that as a charitable organization JWCL also finds a way to support hurricane relief. The board feels strongly that our response to Hurricane Katrina should be ongoing. Meaning that while we are going to suggest two ways we can begin to help as of today, we are going to continue to look for additional ways that JWCL can support the relief efforts over the next several months. Please look at the article below for information on how JWCL as an organization will begin to respond to this need. Thank you for your involvement in our community and I hope you realize now more than ever that what we do here can affect peoples lives for the better all over our nation. JWCL and Hurricane Relief Our immediate reaction to the needs created by Hurricane Katrina is to take a two prong approach – one opportunity here in Loudoun and one in Louisiana. Loudoun: Interfaith Relief: Interfaith Relief had sent over 1,200 pounds of food and water to the affected states as of the end of last week. They have also donated paper products to several shelters set up in DC and Virginia, and offered the continued support of food and water to these locations. Because of their generous support of hurricane relief they have seriously depleted their stock of food. Cindy S, our Interfaith coordinator, contacted Interfaith on Monday, September 12 to discuss their needs. At this time they have no vegetables on the shelf. They are in particular need of corn and green beans. Additionally, they need 100% juice. Of course I am sure that as always they could use canned fruits. The JWCL board agreed that we would do a food drive for Interfaith to support their hurricane relief efforts as well as to enable them to continue to serve our own community. Please bring canned fruit and vegetables as well as 100% juice to our next meeting on Tuesday, September 20. Thank you for your support of this fantastic organization that so generously responded to the need created by Hurricane Katrina. Louisiana: Woman’s Hospital of Baton Rouge: Jennifer S; NICU nurse at Fairfax Hospital, leader of the non-profit Northern Virginia Perinatal Council, and member of JWCL, brought to our attention the needs of one woman’s hospital in Louisiana. Through some professional contacts of hers, Jennifer discovered that the Woman’s Hospital of Baton Rouge has started a Disaster Relief Fund to directly assist their patients and families who were impacted by the hurricane. Jennifer shared with the board the touching email from the Director of Marketing and Development which described what life at that hospital was like during the week following Hurricane Katrina. I have asked her to contact the hospital and discuss how we can be of assistance. In all likelihood we will have a “spare change” drive at our September meeting. I know many of you have already given generously to Hurricane Relief, however, if you feel like you can stretch your pocketbooks a bit more we will be able to have a direct impact on women and children that were affected in Louisiana. There is a chance that we might also be able to gather items for them to use in their NICU to replace what they have already donated to these mothers. Watch your email for an update from Jennifer as to exactly how JWCL will be helping the Woman’s Hospital of Baton Rouge– she will also share with you more of the details of what this hospital’s labor and delivery department experienced over the past few weeks.

A NOTE FROM KATE M & SHANNON L, FUND RAISING CO-CHAIRS Waterford weekend is October 7th, 8th, and 9th. We still have many shifts to fill so, if you haven’t signed up already, please do so at our next meeting. If you will not be attending the meeting, call Shannon to see what is available. This is a holiday weekend and a busy one too, so we need help from absolutely every member to make this a success! The corn muffin mix will be brought to the September meeting for you to pick up and take home. Directions for baking and drop off instructions will be provided at the meeting but can also be found in the Waterford Fair booklet. The Waterford Fair booklet which contains everything you need to know about working at the fair has been sent to every member via e-mail. You will find directions to the fair, as well as, directions to our booth here; so read it thoroughly and print off the pages you need. We got a jump start on preparations for the 2nd Annual Silent Auction and Art Exhibition. The theme is “Giving Seasons” and this event is really shaping up to be another fantastic fundraising opportunity for our club. I hope that the amount of time Shannon spent on the phone soliciting donations will directly correlate to the amount of $$$ we raise from this event!! There will be a raffle, hors d’oeuvres, over 30 auction items and many really fabulous works of art. The Silent Auction will be held at the Area Agency on Aging November 15th, from 7:00 p.m. to 9 p.m. Please make plans to attend and ask a few friends to come with you. There will be something for everyone. We have plenty of space for more auction items, so if any of you have a skill, creation or business and you’d like to donate something, we would love to auction it off. Please contact Shannon prior to soliciting a business donation, as we do not want to duplicate our efforts.
