A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT, MICHELLE T

Hello Ladies,    In the spirit of Women’s History Month I thought I would let you know about some of the women that have walked before you as members of GFWC and contributors to our society.  As members of GFWC we are part of a group of women that has made a difference on so many levels.  You may not recognize some of these names, but as you take a moment to read their accomplishments you will be proud to be part of this international organization that is “rooted in service and reaching out to their community.”

Julia Ward Howe – author of the poem “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” was a prolific writer and suffragette. She organized the New England Woman’s Club in 1868 and served as President of the Massachusetts Federation.

Our own Phyllis V. Roberts lead the way in defending “endangered species.” She was a lifelong conservationist and animal-rights advocate. Her special program goal was to “preserve endangered species, to familiarize clubwomen with the plight of rare, threatened, and endangered species, and to promote active involvement in the preservation and restoration of these species and their habitats.”

Sarah B. Cooper of California was a pioneer in the kindergarten movement, which was enthusiastically supported by the General Federation clubs. She was the GFWC treasurer from 1894 to 1896.

Ellen Demorest helped revolutionize the fashion industry in the 1860s with the invention and mass production of her paper dress making patterns. She owned a successful dress making shop in New York City, and popular magazine and, was a founding member of Sorosis.

bullet

Suffrage reformer, Carrie Chapman Catt, organized the Manila Woman’s Club in 1912. That club would lead to a National Federation of Clubs of the Philippines, a federation that in turn would spearhead the local fight for woman suffrage. In 1916, she spoke to federation clubwomen in the United States of “the most tragic period of history” and the meaning of war to the women of the world.

Nellie Tayloe Ross became the first female governor when she was inaugurated in Wyoming in 1924. She was a member of the Woman’s Club of Cheyenne and served as the first female Director of the U.S. Mint. Also noteworthy was Bertha Ether Knight Landes who was elected the first woman mayor of a major city (Seattle) in 1926

Ellen S. Woodward was appointed by President Roosevelt in 1938 to the three-member Social Security Board, on which she administered the programs of the Social Securities Act. She was an active member of the Mississippi Federation of Women’s Clubs, elected to the state legislature in 1925, and the second woman to serve in the House of Representatives.

Eleanor Roosevelt was a First Lady, social reformer, columnist, teacher, political activist and member of the Chautauqua Woman’s Club of New York. She was a tireless advocate for the poor and disadvantaged, and exercised her influence as a speaker and writer.

I must thank our Northern District 1st Vice President, Mrs. Joan M, who compiled this list as part of her presentation for our district meeting on March 25.  To learn more about the contributions of GFWC women to their communities check out the GFWC website at www.gfwc.org or plan to attend the district meeting and hear more about not only these historic contributions but the contributions that were made by our own club and others in our district over the past year.

A NOTE FROM ELINOR M, FIRST VICE PRESIDENT

We have submitted the last of our reporting items this month.  JWCL has applied for three state awards, the Marjorie Branch Membership Award; the Margaret Allen Thomas Leadership Award; the Thomas Jefferson Health Award and the Junior Club of the Year Award.  In 2005, our club had the honor of winning the Margaret Allen Thomas award and the 2004 Junior Club of the Year award.  We have also qualified for Junior Honor Society. The winners of the awards will be named at the GFWC Virginia Convention in May; a great reason to attend!

A REMINDER FROM KATE M & SHANNON L,  - FUND RAISING CO-CHAIRS

Our Spring fundraiser is quickly approaching!  April 8th we will be participating in the Ashburn Village community yard sale and we need your help to fill Jen M’s yard with STUFF!   Jen will be accepting your donations on Friday, April 7th from 3pm -8pm.  She will have her garage open and you can simply leave the items right inside.  Her address is 20739 Ruffsdale Court.   We feel this is the most efficient way to have the items ready for sale the next morning.  IF you cannot drop your stuff off the night before you will need to do so by 7am Saturday, April 8th.

The official hours for the yard sale are 8am – 1pm but we are setting up at  6am and  splitting the day into 2 shifts so please plan on giving a few a hours of your time that day. If you cannot be there on the 8th we will be selling baked goods and bottled water as well so look for this sign up sheet at our next meeting.

We are not accepting anything broken and since we don’t believe adult clothing sells well at yard sales we have decided not to accept it.  I apologize to those who have already begun to clear these items from their closets.  We will, however, accept infant and children’s clothing, shoes and everything related to kids as these should do well. Please organize the clothing according to size and type to help those who will be setting up the morning of the sale.

We will provide pricing guidelines in the near future to help you price the items you have to donate.   If you have any questions regarding the sale of questionable items or anything else about the yard sale please send Kate an email.

A NOTE FROM JENNIFER M, NEWSLETTER EDITOR

It is that time again to please check your schedules to see if you are free on a Wednesday to deliver Meals on Wheels.  It only takes approximately 30 minutes to deliver warm meals to people in need throughout Leesburg.  You can pick up meals anywhere between 10:00-10:30.  I am looking for volunteers for the months April through June.  If you are interested please sign up at the meeting or let me know
