A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT, PAM
Happy October! This is my favorite month of the year, when the outdoors seem “gift-wrapped” in color as the leaves change and we adorn new fall apparel. October is also important to club in many colorful ways:
We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the October club meeting this Tuesday, October 17th. We will be discussing our upcoming fall membership social and other fun service activities for the coming months. In addition, we will have a real treat as we receive our “official visit” from our very own, Elinor. Elinor is the 3rd Vice President / Director of Junior Clubs for GFWC-VA Northern District. She will inspire us with some of the highlights from her accomplishments as GFWC-VA LEADS representative. Elinor is such a good-natured and hard-working club woman; we are honored to have her as a fellow JWCL member and friend! Finally, a few congratulations to pass along…
=-) Pam **************************************************************************************** A NOTE FROM REBECCA, 1st VICE PRESIDENT / REPORTING CHAIR Autumn is upon us, which means it is time to start to gear up again for reporting! At the October meeting, the newly revised PPS (Club Project/ Program Summary) will be available, as well as an explanation as to who our Department Chairs are and why filling out a PPS sheet on activities you lead is so vital to their role. **************************************************************************************** A MESSAGE FROM RONNA, 2nd VICE PRESIDENT / MEMBERSHIP CHAIR Ladies, **************************************************************************************** A NOTE FROM MELISSA& SHANNON, FUND RAISING COMMITTEE CO-CHAIRS Waterford What's the fragrance, you say? Could that be fall? ...and Waterford? ...and success? A huge thank-you to everyone of you out there -- for baking, working, managing details, offering sage wisdom -- for making Waterford a great success this year! Despite the rain and cold (or because of it?) stew sales were great! And thanks to our back-up bakers, we had enough baked goods to last the weekend, with only a little bit left over! We'll have the final tally at the next meeting, so stay tuned! One last cry for help this year for Waterford. If you are able to store some of the supplies for the coming year, please let Melissa know. Her basement will absolutely not hold it all, even if she gets rid of that box of papers from high school and all the VHS tapes. Supplies consist largely of plastic bins, propane tanks, a small grill, and sundry fold-up chairs and cases of stew. All that's needed is one or two homes with a few square feet of storage space. **************************************************************************************** A MESSAGE FROM ROSALYN
Operation Christmas Child: Want to help make a child's Christmas special this year? Once again, JWCL is supporting Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child. OCC sends shoeboxes filled with toys, school supplies, t-shirts and/or socks to children around the world who might not otherwise get anything for Christmas. Please bring a filled shoebox (or items for a shoebox) to our October meeting on Oct. 17th or to the Nov. 11th Thanksgiving potluck. A plastic shoebox container can also be used. For details on filling the shoeboxes and information on OCC, please see:
If you have any questions, please contact Rosalyn.
**************************************************************************************** A MESSAGE FROM STEPHANIE, PUBLIC & INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT CHAIR Believe it or not, it’s already time to start thinking about Holiday Coalition 2006! This is the 11th year for the wonderful “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” program. I know those of you who have worked or helped in the past will concur that it truly is a privilege to be involved. The Thanksgiving dates will run from November 12-16 and will include distribution of food and personal care items, as well as gently used winter coats, to those in need in our community. The Christmas dates run from December 12-19 and will allow patrons to shop for Christmas gifts, clothes and food/personal care baskets. In the past, our club has helped in a number of ways. Many of you are already participating in advance by helping to assemble “Yummy Tummy Baskets” for Loudoun Volunteer Services “Make a Difference Day”. These baskets will go directly to the Holiday Coalition effort (I’ll be sending out an email reminder to those that signed up to bring items for the baskets.). Our members have also helped by purchasing goodies for Christmas stockings and adult care bags, helping onsite with sorting goods and stocking the collection area, and . . . my personal favorite . . . taking patrons around the store to shop for their families. Trust me . . . you will come away from the experience feeling like YOU are the one who has been “helped” and encouraged by those you’ve met. I will be narrowing down the dates that are available for our club to help this year and will have a sign up sheet at the next meeting. Start giving some thought to how you’d like to help. **************************************************************************************** GFWC President's Special Project: Domestic Violence Awareness, Break the Silence October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. In recognition of this, GFWC and Home Goods Stores have partnered in a campaign to bring awareness to this issue. October 17th is a Day of Shopping at area HomeGoods stores and they have committed to donating $25,000 to the Family Violence Prevention Fund. Let's shop, shop, shop. Hopefully, if this is a successful campaign this year, HomeGoods and GFWC will make this an annual event. There is a HomeGoods store located off of Rte 7 in the Ashbrook Commons Plaza shopping center in Ashburn. See the flyer attached to the Newsletter email. And Elinor will discuss the importance of voting November 7th in regards to the proposed “Marriage” amendment to the Virginia Bill of Rights in our state Constitution. ****************************************************************************************
A MESSAGE FROM ERIN, EDUCATION DEPARTMENT CHAIR The Virginia General Assembly has designated the week of October 15 - 22, 2006 as READ ALOUD to a CHILD WEEK in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Reading aloud is one of the most effective techniques that parents can use to positively impact their children's success in school and in life. Some of the benefits of reading aloud are that it increases vocabulary and language, and it develops listening skills, creativity, and the imagination. They are suggesting that you spend 20 minutes each day of the week reading aloud or talking about stories to your child. Or, you may choose to listen and discuss a book on tape together. Just please keep a record of your time spent. For more information, visit the READ ALOUD website at www.readaloudva.org or contact Joanie Bache, the executive director, at joaniebache@readaloudva.org. ****************************************************************************************
Happy Birthday to all of you!!! Happy Anniversary to all of you!!! **************************************************************************************** Reminders & AnnouncementsOctober 2006
