JWCL September 2006 Meeting Summary   (9/19/06)

Meeting Highlights:

 1.      Joelle C and Dawn M were installed as new members.
 
2.      Rebecca M was installed as 1st Vice President.
 
3.      Fundraising Co-Chairs Shannon L and Melissa S discussed
our Brunswick stew booth at the Waterford Fair. The Fair takes place on
October 6-8th. This is the major fundraiser for the club, so everyone is
required to participate by either baking baked goods or working at the
booth or by doing both if possible. Volunteers are still needed for all
three days. The shifts for working the booth are 8:30 a.m. to
1:30p.m.and1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Baked goods need to be dropped off at Elinor
M’s house on Thursday, October 5th by 9 p.m. If club members are
working the morning shift, they may bring their baked goods with them.
Melissa informed the club that the Waterford booklet will be emailed to
everyone on Wednesday, September 20th.  The booklet will include
directions to Waterford and Elinor’s house, what to wear and other
important information about the event. Club members who signed up to
bake will also be emailed baking directions.
 
4.      A motion was made to move the Silent Auction from the fall to
the spring. The motion passed.
 
5.      Board Member at Large Michelle T informed the club that
the Women’s Club of Loudoun is holding their Out of Attic Sale on
Friday, September 22nd from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, September
23rd from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m .at the Leesburg VFW on Old Waterford Road
across from Rust Library. Their sale will feature gently used household
items, clothes, children’s items, crafts and plants. Lunch and baked
good items will also be for sale. If you attend the sale, please tell
Michelle so she can record it for reporting purposes.
 
6.      2nd Vice- President Ronna S discussed the Thanksgiving
Celebration potluck dinner for club members and their families. The
dinner will take place on Saturday, November 11th at 5 p.m. at Ronna’s house.
Club members are asked to bring a side dish or dessert to share.
 
7.      The Membership committee is putting together a membership
directory. Each club member will have their photo in the directory. Club
members can either email Ronna a recent photo or she will be taking
photos at the October meeting .The Membership committee is also
sponsoring a “Master Gardener” Recruiting Contest. This is a contest to
see who can recruit the most new members. October is Membership month
for GFWC. It is the goal for GFWC VA that each club adds four new
members in October.
 
8.      Club members were asked to “Adopt a Spot”.    Members that
participate in this program will be asked to post a JWCL flyer on a
community bulletin board in such places as the post office, libraries,
rec centers, etc.     Recruiting credit will be given to the member if a prospective sees the flyer and contacts the club.

9.      Northern District will be holding their fall meeting on October
14th from 9 am to 2 p.m in Gainesville. All club members are welcome to
attend. Registration for this event is due by October 1st.
 
10.   Arts and Conservation Chair Kalpana R informed the club that
the Loudoun Arts Council is looking for volunteers for their Loudoun
Arts Designer Show Home at Rust Sanctuary. This event takes place from
September 27th through December 15th. Volunteers are needed to work two
and half hour shifts. This event benefits the Loudoun Arts Council and
Rust Sanctuary.
 
11.  Elinor M spoke to the club about the Violence against Women
Act (VAWA). This law funds a variety of programs such as the National
Domestic Violence Hotline, rape crisis centers, and offers grants to
local abused women shelters.  This law was reauthorized in 2005 but due
to timing the 2007 budget does not include full funding. Funding for
VAWA is dependent on the appropriations process. A final appropriations
vote will be held on September 30th. GFWC is encouraging their members
to contact their Senators and Congressman.
