We are traveling into a new fall season and there are so many exciting things happening with club. Where will our club “journey” take us this coming month? First we’ll start with a visit to the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) building next Tuesday to get together for our monthly meeting. Remember to bring along a hard backed book to send overseas to a soldier. If you can, please make plans to also join us after the meeting for socializing over dessert at a local restaurant. More details to be announced at the meeting. The following week on Tuesday 9/26, we are off to Interfaith to serve at the local food pantry. And don’t forget our weekly Wednesday “stops” to deliver Meals on Wheels. Then we are into October and the fun really begins with our annual fall fundraiser. Sign-up for Waterford – fulfill your club commitment by baking or working the booth or BOTH!! Keep your fingers crossed for cool, dry autumn weather that weekend. Plenty to do on our “itinerary” this month ladies! Keep up the good work! Oh, one more thing – please bring along a friend to this month’s club meeting to learn about club! Each GFWC-VA club has a new member goal to “add 4 to the mix in October 2006”. Introduce your friend this month and by October she could be a full-fledged member!
A NOTE FROM MELISSA & SHANNON, FUND RAISING COMMITTEE CO-CHAIRS Waterford Waterford, Waterford, Waterford! It's almost here! A huge thank-you to everyone who has already volunteered to work and/or bake this year, and a gentle nudge to everyone who hasn't signed up yet. We have several shift positions that MUST be filled, and we need YOU! This is our biggest fundraiser of the year, and we rely on its success for not only our charitable giving, but our club's regular operation. So plan to add your name to the baking and shift sign-ups on Tuesday, or email Melissa. Let's make this our best year ever! A MESSAGE FROM OUR 2nd VICE PRESIDENT, RONNA Ladies, A few important membership notes.... Please reserve the date of November 11th. We'll be having a club-wide Thanksgiving Celebration potluck to celebrate the friendships we have within JWCL and the opportunities we've been given to work together to better our community. Families and spouses are welcome too. The dinner will start at 5p and will be held at my house in Leesburg. A sign-up sheet will be out at the meeting for RSVPing with a side dish or dessert and the number of people who will attend from your party. Or you may RSVP the same information to me by phone at 703-737-0067 or email me. Please check the roster to be sure your information is up-to-date. If you have any changes to make to your information, please let me know. I've attached a membership directory questionnaire form to this newsletter. Please take a moment to fill it out and return it to me at your earliest convenience. You may simply email it to me before the September 19th meeting, or print it out and hand in a completed hard copy of it at the meeting. I would like to have all of these back as soon as possible. I intend to include this information in the membership directory to be completed by the end of the year. Please let me know if you have any concerns or questions regarding this project. I'll also be roaming around trying to get pictures of everyone, so wear your smiling face on Tuesday. : ) A big thank you goes out to Maralyn and Pam for their hard work on the membership information folders this month. Pam spent hours creating and updating many of these documents that are included in the membership folders for our reference. Maralyn graciously photocopied the documents. Several other people including Elinor, Nicole, and Sharon have volunteered to do more copying to finish up the folders. Also please thank Michelle and Becca who have contributed to this project as well. And thank you ladies who responded to the email about photocopying referrals. I appreciate greatly your willingness to go above and beyond to serve the club! As always, if you have any questions or concerns about Membership, please let me know. Or if you have any great ideas to share about Membership, I'm always ready to listen. If you would like to refer a friend, please let me know that too. I'll be happy to call them and personally invite them to a meeting. See you Tuesday! Ronna
Book Collection for Troops Need more space on your shelves? Bring in your hardback books to the meeting next week to donate them to Good Shepherd Alliance. They will be shipping the books to the troops overseas to enjoy during quiet times. Please do not bring any romance type novels. Great suggestions would be by authors John Grisham or Tom Clancy, or any other mystery, comedy, etc type books. If you have any questions, contact Teri.
A Note from Your Board Member at Large – Michelle I want to thank Kate and Carolyn for joining me at the Woman’s Club of Loudoun’s annual membership tea on Saturday, September 9. We enjoyed the opportunity to visit with several of their members while enjoying some delicious desserts. It was also a good opportunity to learn about some of the WCL’s upcoming service projects and fundraisers. The ladies are in the midst of planning their annual Out of the Attic rummage sale. The sale is held at Leesburg VFW Post #1177 (401 Old Waterford Road across from Rust Library). Hours for the sale are Friday, September 22 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Saturday, September 23 from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. In addition to craft items, house plants, games, books, household items, and clothing the members of the Woman’s Club are also planning one of their famous bake sales. It is a good chance to shop for a bargain and pick up a treat at the same time. You can also plan to have lunch at the sale as the women will be serving their famous Sloppy Joes with all the fixings. One of the goals of GFWC of Virginia is that local clubs work together to support each other throughout the year. The ladies of the Woman’s Club of Loudoun always show their support by their attendance of our silent auction – maybe this year we can return the favor by stopping by their Out of the Attic Sale. If you do decide to do a little shopping at the sale next weekend please let me know so that I can record it for our reporting purposes.
GFWC President's Special Project: Domestic Violence Awareness, Break the Silence Did You Know?
The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) was re-authorized by President Bush on January 5, 2005. The programs that are funded by VAWA include: Ø Grants for providing services to victims over age 60 Ø Improve the response to American Indian and Native Alaskan victims who experience the highest rates of physical and sexual assault Ø Help shelters and other service providers better serve victims with disabilities Ø Increase authorization within the Department of Justice to extend grants to state and local governments for services in rural areas Ø Provide funding to rape crisis centers and other programs providing direct services to victims of sexual assault Ø Authorize grant programs to create and improve services to youth and young adults Ø Prevent violence against women and children by reaching out to families at risk Ø Train health care workers to recognize and respond to domestic and sexual violence Ø Create housing solutions for victims, including allowing victims to access the criminal justice system while maintaining their housing Ø Expand transitional housing programs and funding for shelters Ø Continue funding of the National Domestic Violence Hotline which provides crisis intervention, information about victim services and law enforcement services 24 hours a day Ø Ensure existing forms of immigration relief are available to victims through amendments to current law Ø Allow victims to keep their jobs by allowing access to unpaid leave for victims Because of the timing of the re-authorization the President’s 2007 budget request does not include full funding for VAWA. Funding for VAWA programs is dependent on the appropriations process which will determine the actual spending on specific programs. Please take a few minutes to contact congress and let them know that you support full funding of the 2005 VAWA re-authorization. You can e-mail Congressman Frank Wolf at www.house.gov and Senators John Warner and George Allen at www.senate.gov. The final appropriations vote will take place September 30, 2006.
A Note from the Department of Education Chair – Erin The Boys and Girls Clubs of Loudoun received the go-ahead to open programs at two Loudoun County schools for the 2006-07 school year: Sterling Middle School and Simpson Middle School. During their open house and first round of sign-ups, they had 18 students sign up at Sterling and 27 students sign up at Simpson. Even more parents took the membership information home with them. This is encouraging news since the previous programs at these schools only support a total of 20 students combined. The Latino parents at Sterling Middle School absolutely loved Carolina as she gave her presentation in Spanish. The Simpson parents where impressed when Chris Woodby announced that the Simpson members will be treated to a sleepover at the Carteret branch on the last Friday of September. The principals of the schools were so encouraged by the interest that they offered the B&GC more space and the use of their computer labs. The county board members showed up for both open house sessions and were excited to see the participation and interest of the parents/children. The staff and programs were ready to go when school opened. And it’s estimated that each site will grow to 50 students by October 1st. The B&GC staff is slated to make an official report to the county on November 1st. I would like to thank Elinor for bringing this opportunity to the club and for all of her hard work in helping to better the community in this effort.
Happy Birthday to you!!! Happy Anniversary to you!!!
