JWCL January 2007 Meeting Summary

Meeting Highlights

 1.      Shawnda G was installed as a new member.
 
2.      The Fundraising committee has begun planning for the Silent Auction. A date for the event has not been determined yet.   Anyone interested in planning this event can contact Shannon L or Melissa S.
 
3.      Treasurer Amy H presented the proposed budget for 2007. The budget was amended to increase the amount for the Junior Travel Fund from $5 to $10. This fund helps to pay for the Junior Director’s travel costs that she incurs traveling to GFWC events across the state. A motion was made to approve the budget. This motion passed. The Board is considering creating a Budget committee. It has also been proposed that we change our budget year from a calendar year to August to June, to be more in line with the club’s year. A CPA will be consulted to see if this change is possible.  
 
4.      2nd Vice- President Ronna S informed the club that she is still working on the Membership directories. The Membership committee will be working on an informal social event for February.
 

5. Lori R and Elinor M gave a short presentation on LEADS, which stands for Leadership Education and Development Seminar. Each year GFWC tries to identify future leaders in the local clubs. One representative for each state is picked to attend the National LEADS conference. This year the LEADS conference will be held in June in Philadelphia. Elinor represented Virginia at last year’s conference in Denver. Participants learn about GFWC, parliamentary procedure, speech writing and public speaking. In addition to the leadership training, participants get to meet other women from all over the country. The application deadline for this year’s LEADS is February 1st. If anyone is interested in applying, contact Lori or Elinor.

 
6.      Emily H informed the club that the Fairy Tale Closet committee has begun planning for this year’s event. She stated that they are contacting local women gyms, such as Curves, to see if they would allow collection boxes to be placed in their businesses. Emily has contacted Dulles Town Center to arrange a time to set up a table to collect dresses at the mall. She hopes to do this in late February or early March. A flyer for the Fairy Tale Closet will be sent out to members to post.  
 
7.      A motion was made that JWCL continue to support MADD activities in 2007. The motion was passed. Lori R  informed the club that MADD is looking for judges for their Poster and Essay contest that takes place on March 14th. If you interested in volunteering for this event, contact Lori.
