A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT, PAM S

Can it be that the JWCL Journey for the 2006-2007 club year is coming to an end?     When I took the helm and we set sail together just one year ago, we could not have imagined how different life would be today for us …      in all sorts of ways.

bulletOur club has grown and been enriched by the 9 new members that joined club this past year.
bulletThere have been several new additions to our members’ families as we welcomed 7 new future volunteers.
bulletWe found new, creative opportunities to promote club, such as the Leesburg Holiday Parade, Loudoun Volunteer Fair, and our upcoming Tarara Winery venue for Silent Auction.
bulletWe’ve rallied to support fellow club women as they’ve experienced intense loss or illness.   Team Misty has been a tremendous success and we’ve been inspired by Misty’s courage, strength, and positive attitude.

So where have we ended up one year later from our departure ….  Maybe it’s where we expected to be, or maybe it’s different?  Maybe it’s Holland?

There is an essay written by Emily Perl Kingsley, entitled “Welcome to Holland”.  In her writing, she describes the experience of having a child with a disability.  She uses a travel analogy (how fitting☺) of planning a trip to Italy.  Italy is where you plan to go, where you want to go, and where you imagine you’ll be.  But, instead, you arrive at your destination and find that you are in Holland.  Holland?  What happened?  It is very different from Italy; it’s not what you wanted; not what you expected.   You stomp your feet.  Italy was what you wanted!!  But the point of the essay is that “if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn't get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things about Holland".

Several people have asked me personally what the past several months of my own life have been like as I adjust to having three children, the youngest of whom has Down Syndrome.  Well, I never could’ve imagined specialized therapies for Eliza starting at 6 weeks old or trying to understand unique medical procedures or learning a completely new special education language.  But, here I am…. and remarkably, I am finding that my life and the lives of those around me are being enriched by this leg of life’s journey.  Each day I find reason to fall more in love with Holland!

So, thank you for an amazing “ride” this past year.  I have enjoyed my role as President of JWCL.   Thank you for supporting the ideas I brought to club, thank you for your kindness, and thank you for respecting my decision to step down at this particular point in my life.  I am very excited for the new club administration that takes over this month and the tremendous leadership that they bring to JWCL.   Ladies, let’s go forward and begin a new club year committed to actively promote JOY along our JOURNEY.

Lots of ♥-  Pam

A MESSAGE FROM RONNA S, 2nd VICE PRESIDENT / MEMBERSHIP CHAIR

Ladies,    Well, this is my last message to you as your Membership Chair.  Thank you for letting me serve you and the club in this manner!  It's been a wonderful year and I'll miss the job, but I'm happy to be turning over the position to Kalpana R.  She will be great at this position!

This month, we have our Ladies Night Out at Magnolia's to celebrate a job well done for our 2006-2007 officers, and to install the 2007-2008 officers.  It will be a fun-filled time for all!  We'll also be adding another member on Tuesday.  Please welcome Kate H to the club.  Kate, we are glad you are joining us!

Over the summer, I hope you will take some time to relax and unwind so that in August, you'll be ready...ready to make a difference in the lives of others through JWCL!

Have a fantastic summer!   Ronna

A MESSAGE FROM THE SILENT AUCTION COMMITTEE

Get your tickets!  Meet part of your 3 for 3 requirements by purchasing your 3 tickets for the Auction!  You are welcomed to purchase more than 3 if you would like.  We are asking members to prepay for their tickets so we can meet our obligations to Tarara.  Tickets are $10 each and we'll accept cash or checks payable to JWCL.  So far, we have sold 55 of the 150 tickets that we are obligated to sell. Join the 15 members who have done their part and purchase your tickets at the June Ladies Night Out or contact Lori R  to arrange a time/place to pick them up.

A MESSAGE FROM REBECCA MAKOWSKI ABOUT RELAY FOR LIFE 2007

Thank you to all our members of our 2007 Relay for Life team!  Our event site (Heritage High School) raised $177,000 and our team raised $2,245.00!!  Our fundraising efforts made us a Bronze All Star team, meaning that the average amount raised per member was between $150 and $249.

Thank you to Pam, Michelle, Cindy, Jen, Ronna, Shannon and Lori and to our honorary JWCLers for the day, Chris, Debbie, Danny, and Chip (who handled set-up) for all your efforts!

COMMITTEE DESCRIPTIONS

It’s time to start thinking about signing up for a committee. There will a committee sign up sheet at our next meeting. Here are brief descriptions of our standing committees:

FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE DESCRIPTION:

The Fundraising Committee is responsible for two events including the Waterford Fair which takes place in October and the Silent Auction which should take place in late spring/ early summer.  These are the two events we do during the year which produce funds that we distribute to worthwhile organizations.

If you are interested in working in a team environment and having fun doing it, then this is the committee for you.  Everyone will be expected to step-up in some capacity.   I feel that everyone has a talent to offer and there are many opportunities on this committee to bring your strengths to the forefront.  If you have any questions please contact Joey C.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE DESCRIPTION:

Membership is the key to success for any service-oriented organization. Though our membership has been consistent, we have the true potential for growth. We are, after all, in the fastest growing county in the United States. The club not only needs new members but also needs ways to retain the current membership.

This year the membership committee will focus on both growth and retention. For the growth aspect, we plan on hosting a membership event in January to spread the word about JWCL. We need creative people on this committee to help plan this important event. For the retention aspect, we will have team building and social events hosted by people on the committee. These events will be much smaller in nature but also very important to the success of our club. If you like hosting events, creating ways for the membership to interact, or you are just interested in growing our club, please consider joining the Membership committee. This committee is the key to our club's success! This year the Membership committee will be chaired by Kalpana R. The Sunshine chair will be Becca A.

PUBLIC RELATIONS COMMITTEE DESCRIPTION:

Are you interested in getting JWCL in the news?  Or do you prefer shopping for clothes?  Well here is your opportunity to do both!  As members on the PUBLIC RELATIONS committee we are responsible for advertising the events that we take such pride in doing (Fairy Tale Closet, Membership Drives, Silent Auction, etc.) as well as publicly thanking those who have help us with such activities.  We are also in charge of offering to everyone the opportunity to buy a JWCL hat and/or shirt.  If this sounds like something you are interested in or if you have any questions please talk to Emily H or Cindy S.
