A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT, RONNA S
Hi Ladies, The weather is turning cooler and the kids are back in school…Fall is upon us! I found a quote I wanted to share with all of you about heroes: Few of us will do the spectacular deeds of heroism that spread themselves across the pages of our newspapers in big black headlines. But we can all be heroic in the little things of everyday life. We can do the helpful things, say the kind words, meet our difficulties with courage and high hearts, stand up for the right when the cost is high, keep our word even though it means sacrifice, be a giver instead of a destroyer. Often this quiet, humble heroism is the greatest heroism of all. -- Wilferd A. Peterson When I saw this quote, I thought of all of you and the good our club members do for each other and throughout the community. We have women among us that are great moms, leaders, teachers, coaches, and dear friends. We have women among us that give time, energy, resources, and themselves to inspire and help others. We have women among us who are strong enough to defeat physical ills and social ills. Ladies, we are strong, and we make a difference! This month, as you are signing up for your committee, please consider your abilities. Select a committee based on your strengths to share your gifts, or select a committee based on your perceived weakness to contribute to the club while growing your own talents. Remember, most committee work will be done through phone calls and emails, meeting in person only when necessary, and serving on a standing committee is one of the few requirements of active membership in JWCL. And don’t forget to sign up to help at the Waterford Fair. We have opportunities for leadership roles, working at the Fair, and baking for the Fair. Make sure you support the club in this effort to help us continue our good deeds. The monies raised at Waterford Fair sustain our club by providing income for our operating budget, and benefit the community by allowing us to make end-of-the-year donations. I hope to see you all on Tuesday night! Ronna
**************************************************************************************** A MESSAGE FROM THE 1ST VICE PRESIDENT REBECCA M Reporting time will be here before we know it! If I have contacted you regarding an event you chaired, please get back to me as soon as possible with the PPS information. Thanks! **************************************************************************************** A MESSAGE FROM THE FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE We have a lot going on in fundraising at the moment. The Toasting the Stars Silent Auction was held on August 18th at Tarara Winery. With plenty of help from the club it was a big success. In the end we raised $6,801.05 that will be divided amongst various charities as well as for JWCL to use in future giving. It is also important to note that we sold 162 tickets (12 more then required) and had 85% participation from the club. Everyone should give themselves a big hand for a job well done. Waterford Fair is coming up on October 5th, 6th and 7th. We have a committee of four including myself, Kate M, Kate H and Sarah M. This is an annual event that many people in the club are familiar with. I have recently send information to everyone about volunteering opportunities and there will also be a chance for you to sign up at the September meeting. We also need lots of bakers for corn muffins and assorted baked goods that we sell. There will be a sign-up for that as well at September meeting and information going out via e-mail if we do not get enough people at the meeting. We have received many donations and are hoping that the weather favors us this year and that it is our most successful year ever. We are still signing people up for the Fundraising Committee and would love for you to be a part of it all. We will be having a meeting in early November to map out the rest of the year so sign-up now. **************************************************************************************** A MESSAGE FROM AMY BELL ABOUT MEALS ON WHEELS We will now be delivering Meals on Wheels the 1st two Wednesdays of each month. I want to apologize for double booking a couple of the Wednesdays. I’m sorry for any inconvenience it may have caused. September is filled…thanks! However, there are still opportunities to volunteer in Oct, Nov, and Dec. There are some easy guidelines to follow when helping out with MOW. I have attached a copy of the new guidelines and will place a copy next to the sign-up sheet at the next meeting. Please look at the sign-up sheet and if there are any Wednesday’s that you can volunteer to deliver meals, please let me know. If you haven’t done it before or are new to club and want more info, please don’t hesitate to ask. Please e-mail me directly. It is a quick 30 minutes to volunteer and we are providing a tremendous help to the community. Thank You. **************************************************************************************** MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE NEWS FROM KALPANA The committee had a brainstorming session a few days ago at a lovely Starbucks in Ashburn. We have many exciting events to think about in the upcoming year. We are contemplating a “Ladies Night In” for our December meeting as well as various other informal and formal gatherings. If you would like your two cents heard, join our committee. The first official meeting will be at 6:45 pm, just before our normal club meeting in the same room as our meeting! I have not heard of any new babies being born, though I do know of few being created—but I won't share their news, until they do. As far as birthdays, we can wish Kate H, Misty S and Carolyn Z! We have quite a few birthday next month. I hope you all had a wonderful start to the new school year. Enjoy the coming days of cooler weather and less insects! Let’s all do the “no rain dance” and get ready for the Waterford Festival! **************************************************************************************** “MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY” from REBECCA M At our club meeting in October, we will be collecting items to deliver to the Holiday Coalition in honor of Make a Difference Day. I will have a sign-up at the September meeting, but if you cannot be there and are interested in donating one (or more) of the items listed below, please let me know. We will be assembling the items into baskets that will be delivered to Holiday Coalition on October 27th and used for both their Thanksgiving and Christmas distributions. Homey Household Basket: laundry basket, toilet paper, paper towels, kleenex, laundry detergent, sponges, trash bags, dishwashing detergent, all-purpose cleaner.
