JWCL September 18, 2007 Meeting Summary

Meeting Highlights

 
  1. Elinor M., 3rd Vice-President of GFWC Virginia, Northern District spoke to the club about the GFWC’s President’s project Domestic Violence Awareness.
 
  1. A motion was made for JWCL to look into holding a Chico’s wardrobe party to benefit Domestic Violence Awareness. The motion was seconded and carried.
 
  1. GFWC and the National Domestic Violence Hotline have formed a partnership to support the Million Voices Campaign to End Domestic Violence in America. The purpose of this campaign is to create a national association of volunteers working to educate and raise awareness of solutions to domestic violence in their communities. The goal is to recruit a million members by October 1, 2008. A motion was made for JWCL to support the Million Voices campaign. The motion was seconded and carried. JWCL members were asked to show their support by joining online at www.ndvh.org/million.
 
  1. Fundraising Chair Joey C. informed the club that the Silent Auction made $6801.05 in profit. 85% of the club membership participated in the event. We sold 162 concert tickets, which was 12 more than we were required to sell. Our benefactors will be presented their checks at the October meeting.
 
  1. The Waterford Fair will take place on October 5th through the 7th this year. Sign up sheets for baking and volunteering were provided at the meeting. Baked goods need to be dropped off at Kate H.’s house on Wednesday, October 3rd.
 
  1. Second Vice- President Kalpana R. reminded the members that club dues are due next month.
 
  1. President Ronna S. presented information to the members concerning JWCL possibly obtaining 501(c)(3) status. JWCL has been presented with the opportunity to obtain this status under the GFWC –VA umbrella. By doing this under GFWC-VA, it will mean less paperwork we will need to complete and it will not be as expensive as if we pursued this on our own. GFWC-VA does require that we amend our bylaws with specific wording in order to be considered for this tax status. JWCL must file all the necessary paperwork by October 15th.
 
  1. A motion was made that JWCL pursue the 501(c)(3) status under the GFWC-VA umbrella. The motion was seconded and carried.
 
  1. A motion was made to allow JWCL to amend their bylaws out of cycle for the purposes of this tax status deadline. The motion was seconded and carried.
 
  1. A motion was made to amend the Article II Object and Article XII Dissolution of the Bylaws. The motion was seconded and carried. Those amended Articles will now read as follows;
 
Article II Object
This organization is organized exclusively for the charitable, educational, and scientific purposes under section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, or corresponding section of any future Federal tax code.
 
Article  XIL Dissolution
Upon the dissolution of this organization, or in the event the organization no longer qualifies as a 501(c)(3) organization, the assets shall be distributed for one or more exempt purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code or corresponding section of any future Federal tax code, or shall be distributed to the Federal Government, or the State or Local Government, for a public purpose.
 
  1. A motion was made to donate $100 to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in memory of Meghan Stewart, daughter of our former member Pam Stewart. Meghan died from complications of Cystic Fibrosis during the second week of September. The motion was seconded and carried.
 
  1. Items are being collected to create three baskets of supplies for Make a Difference Day in October. Anyone wishing to contribute can contact Rebecca M.
