A
MESSAGE
FROM OUR PRESIDENT, RONNA S

Ladies,
The new year is here and now is the time to hone our hero
skills. We have many opportunities coming up to do some great things for those
in need. Some highlights for the spring are outlined below:
FEBRUARY
 |
The Membership Recruiting Event, Sweet
Treats and Coffee Galore -- February 5th at 7:00p at Belmont Greene
Community Association --
Please mark this on your calendars! We need everyone's help to share the
word about the good JWCL does. We need everyone's help to make this event
successful. Bring your friends, family, neighbors, hairdressers, pet
sitters, babysitters, any lady you know who is looking to get involved in
the community and meet other women. Kalpana has sent out the eVite so that
it can be forwarded on to your contacts. Please do so! Also, handouts will
be available at the meeting for the people who don't check email or who you
meet at the store. Grab some and hand them out so that we will have lots of
people to entertain on the 5th! |
 |
Submission of projects/donations of $500 or
more are due February 29th
-- We have the wonderful task of determining where to spend the remaining
$1680 of our Silent Auction proceeds. Now that the holidays are over, we
should be able to find some notable projects and charities to support with
that money. We would like consider making a big impact in an area of great
need. The criteria is that the charity/project should have a need we can
fulfill costing $500 or more and be run by a charity that contributes a vast
majority of it's donations to the cause rather than using it for operating
expenses. Ideas may be submitted to me via email, and must be received by
the last day of February. I'll also have a box into which you can drop your
ideas at the meeting on Tuesday. Please note the charity's name, contact
information, project to be funded, and the amount needed on the request. We
will vote on the cause in March, and hope to make check presentations in
April in honor of JWCL's 57th birthday and Federation Day. |
MARCH
 |
Northern District Spring Meeting in March
-- The District leadership will finalize the date soon and I'll let you know
more information as it becomes available. Please come to learn more about
the District to which our club belongs and see our own club members, Lori R
and Elinor M, using their hero talents to serve not only our club but the
larger organization. It's a real learning experience and a lot of fun!
Stay tuned for more information! |
 |
Daffodil Days in March
-- We are looking for a hero to head this up this year. Daffodil Days is an
annual fundraising event for The American Cancer Society to fund cancer
research. We've done it the past few years. Even if you don't want to head
up the coordination effort with the local affiliate, you can sign up to
deliver the daffodils to the various local companies who have participated
in the sale of the daffodils. And you may order daffodils yourself to
support the cause |
APRIL
 |
Fairy Tale Closet with set up on April 18th
and the event itself on April 19th at the Hampton Inn in Leesburg
-- Once again, we will be making
girls' dreams come true by outfitting underprivileged teens for the evening
of their highschool lives, the Prom! Help will be needed up until this date
with collections and other tasks Dawn M and Maralyn S outline for us. But
we also need people to help with set up, take down, and the event itself.
It's a heartwarming event and I hope all of you will take a turn to help.
We are the organizers of this event, so it would not happen without total
club support. |
 |
GFWC-VA Convention in Richmond, Virginia,
the weekend of April 25th --
Come and learn more about the state organization, and meet the wonderful
women who provide us with guidance, leadership, and the structure we need to
stay on task. This is a fun weekend adventure! Please consider attending.
We'd like to have a delegation to represent us here and to support Lori R in
her state duties as the GFWC-VA Assistant Director of Junior Clubs. More
information will come later as the details are released. |
 |
March of Dimes in Leesburg on April 27th
-- If you are unable to attend the Convention, please support our efforts by
working and walking in the Leesburg March of Dimes walk. We need a hero to
step forward and coordinate the effort and many more of you to work and
walk. It's a great, family-friendly event (pets can walk too!) with a yummy
picnic at the end. What's more, we get to contribute to the health and
welfare of pregnant women and their babies. Their research and information
has gone to preventing premature babies by working to increase the health of
the mothers and ways to help premature neonates survive after they enter the
world. |
MAY
 |
Meghan's Walk (Great Strides) on May 18th in
Leesburg -- More information
will be coming about this soon. Michelle T will be coordinating this effort
on our behalf. This walk is in honor of former JWCL member, Pam Stewart's
daughter, Meghan, who died last year of Cystic Fibrosis. This walk raises
money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to find a cure for that disease.
We'd love to have a big showing of members to work the event and walk to
show our support for Pam and her family. |
 |
Relay for Life in Leesburg on May 31st and
June 1st -- This is an
all-night event that will be coordinated this year by Rebecca M. Relay, for
short, is a fun-filled overnight event to celebrate the survivors of cancer
and to raise money for the American Cancer Society for their research and
programs. During the event, we will take turns walking and resting in a
tent while we enjoy the fellowship of our club members. We order dinner to
eat together and purchase luminaries to show our support for those we know
that have had cancer. It's an amazing evening to see the luminaries
lighting up the darkening track as the sun sets. You really should not miss
this event! |
JUNE
 |
Susan G. Komen Walk in DC on June 7th
-- We need a hero to be our liaison for this event, and we need walkers.
This is the walk to raise money for Breast Cancer research and awareness.
This is near and dear to all our hearts with the diagnosis of Misty S last
year. She has fought it and won, and will inspire us all to walk or run for
this cause. More information on this event will be shared when available. |
 |
June Ladies' Night Out
-- This is the last event for this year's Club Leaders. At this meeting, we
will celebrate all that we've accomplished this year, and pass the torch on
to the new leaders. Kalpana will have information regarding this event once
planning is under way, but I wanted to make sure you all start thinking
about saving a June date for this purpose. |
As
you can see, we have a lot to look forward to and to accomplish this Spring. I
can't wait to get started and I hope you will sign up for as many of these
rewarding events as you can. Just think of reserving these dates as the head
start to completing your New Year's resolution to make the world a better place!
FIND THE HERO INSIDE YOU!!!

2008 CHARITY WALK
DATES
Please mark your calendars for the following spring walk
fundraisers! We need to have a chair for each of these events, so if you are
interested, please let Rebecca M know! Chairs are essential to the
livelihood of our participation in these programs......if we don't have a chair
or interest in participating, we will make sure we don't commit ourselves to
having a team. So, if you're interested, let us know!

A MESSAGE FROM THE
FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE
I hope
everyone had a wonderful holiday season. There are two things that I need to
communicate to the club. The first has to do with the money that we raised at
the Toasting The Stars Silent Auction. As you may remember, we had a check
presentation to the three charities that we had previously designated. We gave
each charity $1,680. In addition, we kept in reserve $1,600 to be given away at
a later date.
Well, that
later date is now! I would ask that you bring idea's to share to the January and
February meetings. We will have a box where you can put in your idea's. If you
can't make the club meetings or have an idea that you would like to convey by
e-mail you can send that to me via email. The suggestions will be compiled and
presented for a vote at the March meeting.
What we would
like to do with this sizable amount of money is to make an impact on an
organization or two. Rather then send a lot of charities a smaller amount as we
did at the end of the year we would like to see this money go to one or two
organizations at most to a specific project where it will make a difference.
When you present idea's keep this in mind and try to address a specific need of
the organization and what amount of money would be needed. Also, I have strong
feelings about giving our money to highly rated charities.
What that
means is that the charity spends a majority of their funds on their mission
statement and keeps administrative costs low. I will do the research on this as
I receive suggestions from the club. If any charity does not meet a high
standard then I will present that to the membership at the time of voting.
The other news is that it looks like we will not be working with Tarara Winery
this year for the silent auction. The board decided that selling 150 tickets and
doing the auction was too much for theclub to handle. I asked Tarara if they
would let us come in gratis but they were not interested. We have done two
fundraisers for the term so we are fine and on track as far as that goes. I will
be looking at alternatives to take us into the next term and meet with the
Fundraising Committee to evaluate the alternatives. I will keep you updated when
there is more information.

MEMBERSHIP
COMMITTEE NEWS
Our Membership recruiting
event is almost here. The success of this event is dependent on you! Yes—you
reading this, need to be there—and bring a couple of friends. At the club
meeting we will be passing out informal invitations. Please take a few and
bring a buddy with you. The event will be held at Belmont Greene Community
Center (43003 Chesterton St Ashburn, VA 20147). It will be on February 5th
starting at 7:00 pm. We will have delicious chocolate fountains, rich coffee
and a demonstration from Terri Driscoll on chocolate mousse. Don't worry if you
don't like chocolate or coffee, we will have some other treats for you as well.
A few of you signed up to
bring some non-perishable items to the next club meeting to help us prepare for
our membership event. Here is the list:
 |
Kate H—1
box graham crackers |
 |
Becca S-1
box of graham crackers |
 |
Cheryl K—3
boxes of social crackers for cheese platter |
 |
Michele T—3
bags of marshmallows ( I think the big kind would work better) |
 |
Emily
H—lots of bamboo skewers and other things from party store that we discussed |
 |
Trinia Z-2
bags of mini pretzels |
 |
Jennifer
K—a box of hot chocolate packets |
 |
Carolyn Z-a
box of hot chocolate packets |
 |
Ronna S—a
variety of teas |
We
are holding off on coffee to see if anyone can get coffee boxes donated from a
local coffee shop. We would need probably 5 boxes of decaf and 5 boxes of
regular. This would make life a little easier the day of the event—so we don't
have to worry about brewing coffee. If anyone is a Greenberry's or any other
local coffee shop? If so please ask the manager for a donation of brewed coffee
for the afternoon of 2/5. We will advertise the coffee shop at our event!
I will send out an email
about perishable items a week or so before the event. Thanks for all who signed
up! Look out for the Evite—please use it to invite your friends and neighbors!
Emily H will be bringing copies of the invite to the meeting, but
if anyone needs them in advance or won't be attending next week's meeting,
you can print the invites and/or flyers themselves from the attachments.
Please remind everyone in the newsletter to try and bring a friend, coworker
or neighbor to the event on Tuesday
Feburary 5th! Please see
