A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT – Tanya

What a wonderful fall we are having!  I hope you are finding time to get out and enjoy the colors and the cooler weather.  I want to thank Michelle for putting together a fantastic Octoberfest.  The buzz around JWCL is that everyone had a very enjoyable evening and many are hoping we will return next year.

Since our last meeting, I have attended the gala meeting with Habitat for Humanity and am excited to report that we are in charge of the auction portion of the event.  I have lots of information to share with you all at our next meeting.  I also attended the membership committee meeting and am excited to report we are well on our way to great membership recruitment event in January.  I want you all to start thinking about who you know and who you might like to invite.

This month our topic for club education will be Camp East.  We will learn the who’s, what’s and how we play a part in this camp for the disabled.  I also want to encourage you to be thinking about who you would like to donate club funds to this year.  December is “donation” month.  If there is a charity/group/program etc. that you feel you would like to see us donate money to please write a brief paragraph/testimonial about it. I will attach them to the December newsletter and provide them to you on ladies night out where we will vote.  See you November 19th!  Tanya

Membership Message – Michelle

Hello Ladies.    First I want to thank everyone for helping to make our first Oktoberfest a great success.  I truly enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with each of you and meet your families and friends.  From all the positive feedback that I have received I would bet that we make this an annual tradition.

I would also like to congratulate our three new members that were initiated at the October meeting; Liza, Joyia, and Stephanie.  Each of these women is very enthusiastic, and they make a great addition to our club.  I would also like to welcome three new prospective members that attended the same meeting; Kim, Michelle, and Jennifer.  We are all looking forward to getting to know these women better as they become involved with JWCL.

DECEMBER LADIES NIGHT OUT

Mark your calendars JWCL’s December Ladies Night Out is set for Tuesday, December 17 at the Laurel Brigade Inn.  Cocktails will begin at 7:00p.m.with dinner and our business meeting starting at approximately 7:30 p.m.  Cost for the evening will be $25 including tax and gratuity.  Your meal includes soup or salad, entrée, desert, soft drinks, tea or coffee.  Alcoholic beverages will be extra.  The Laurel Brigade Inn has requested that we each pay individually the night of the dinner as you arrive.  You will also be able to purchase tickets for alcoholic beverages at the front desk (wine and beer $4, mixed drinks $5).  However, I will need to call in a reservation number and meal order prior to the event.  So watch your e-mail for a menu list and request for you to RSVP.  That should come out in the next week or so.

JANUARY RECRUITMENT EVENT

The date is set for our January Recruitment Event.  We will hold the event at the Exeter Clubhouse on Tuesday, January 28 at 7:30 in the evening.  It is very important for our current members to attend this event.  At the recruitment event in January of 2001 we had almost 40 guests.  We need each of you to be present in order to meet and mingle with this year’s guests, as well as to represent the diversity of clubwomen.

The Membership Committee is requesting that members please bring names and addresses of anyone that they know that might be interested in becoming a members of JWCL.  This is your chance to have invitations sent to neighbors, church friends, family members, playgroup members.  Please bring these addresses to the November and December meeting.           Watch your e-mail for more information on this event.

 MONTHLY SOCIAL NIGHT

Starting in January the membership committee has decided to begin a monthly gal’s night out.  This optional social evening will be planned each month by a JWCL member.  Tanya has graciously agreed to play hostess for our first month.  She will be planning an outing for January, and will let us know the date, time and location at the December meeting.  I will also be passing around a calendar for February through August at that meeting.  If you are interested in planning an event then look at your calendars in advance and plan to sign up for a month that evening.  These social evenings should give us a chance to get to know each other better.

Spring Fundraiser

Now that Waterford is behind us, it is time to start thinking about a spring fundraiser. I would like to see us plan to hold some type of fundraiser in April. There will be a Ways and Means committee meeting at my house on Monday, November 11th at 7:30 P.M. We are currently in need of some more members on our committee. If you are new to the club and you would like to help us plan the next fundraiser, we would love to have you.  If you would like to attend our meeting, please let me know. We would also like any feed back club members may have on whether to hold another Mother’s Sale this spring or try something completely new. We would also like to hear any fundraising ideas that members may have. Cheryl; Ways and Means Committee Chairman

PROM DRESS CAMPAIGN – Terri

I have started collecting information about organizing a prom dress "giveaway" event in the spring. For those of you who were not at the last meeting, here's a little background. I had read a few articles about individuals and/or groups who organized an event for teenage girls to receive a free prom dress and accessories at no charge. Girls who would not otherwise be able to attend the prom due to financial reasons would be invited to the event in hope that they would be able to find a dress for their prom. The organizing group would collect item donations from stores, friends, co-workers, family and invite selected girls to the event. So far, I have talked to one woman who is in the process of planning her first event in the Hampton Roads area and got some great ideas. She is sending me examples of some flyers and other materials that she is using that I hope to get in time for our meeting next week. I hope to set up a meeting for the prom dress committee next week, so if you are interested and didn't sign the sign up sheet, just send me an email or give me a call. I think this will be so much fun!

TREASURER’S REPORT – Susan; As reported at October's meeting.
Savings as of 8/20/02 is $2,307.96.  Checking as of 10/16/02 is $14,074.28.
Checking is unusually high because most expenditures from Waterford haven't
cleared.  I haven't received all expenses from Waterford, but the high dollar
expenses are included in my numbers.  Waterford gross was $6,581.26.  Our
expenses were $2307.18 plus our donation to the Waterford Foundation
($314.06) for a total of $2621.24.  This makes our net from Waterford
$3960.02.   October expenditures also include a $50 deposit for Great Country
Farms and Verizon $31.83.  The Verizon phone bill will now be automatically
deducted from our checking account.  Yeah!  Now, I'm working on a draft of
the '03 budget.  Please feel free to call me with any questions or suggestions.  Thanks!  Susan
