Loudoun Lady Newsletter GFWC – Virginia, Northern District
May 2004, Newsletter Volume P, Issue 4
Next Meeting: Tuesday,
May 18th at 7:30 p.m New Meeting Location: The Area Agency on Aging has moved and our meeting
location has moved with them. The
Agency is now located at 215 Depot Court. It
is approximately across the street from the Tuscarora Mill Restaurant and right
next to the Morningside Assisted Living House.
Our meeting will be in the multi-purpose room. As with the previous location, just tell the guard(s)
you’re with JWCL and they will point you in the right direction. A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT, SUSAN B. I want to thank Lori C for representing us at the convention- my childcare for the weekend fell through so Lori represented our club. Convention is a lot of fun and you learn so much about GFWC- I really hated to miss it. Perhaps at the next convention we can get a group to go together. Thank you to everyone who brought gifts for Birthday Blessings to our April meeting. Becca A took the items to Birthday Blessings. Thanks, Becca! Also, thank you to the Nominating Committee. The Nominating Committee will present a slate of officers for us to vote on at the meeting tonight. Those voted in to office will be installed during our June meeting. In the month of May, we have had members volunteer for Megan’s walk and are still looking for volunteers to work at Sr. Citizen’s Day. Don’t forget to wear your red JWCL t-shirt to these volunteer events. Every time I wear mine, I always have someone asking me about JWCL. It’s a great way to advertise our club. It’s hard to believe that summer is almost here…stay cool and keep making memories!
A NOTE FROM TERI H, FIRST VICE PRESIDENT Please save your spare change for a Lovettsville family! Back in March, a family with 10 children lost their home and all of their belongings in a house fire. A fund through the BB&T bank in Lovettsville has been set up for donations for this family. If you would like to make a donation, please bring your spare change to tonight’s club meeting.
A MEMBERSHIP MESSAGE FROM MICHELLE T, our second vice president Hello Ladies! I would like to take a second to welcome our visitors from the April meeting; Jackie M and Erin O. I also wanted to thank J.J. M and Jennifer V for inviting them to attend. I really appreciate the fact that so many of you are doing a fantastic job recruiting new members for JWCL. The growth we have seen in membership over the past few years has enabled us to do more for our community. Please continue to recruit your friends, family members and neighbors. JWCL is a wonderful way for people to make new friends and give back to their community at the same time. Just a reminder our June Ladies Night Out will be Tuesday, June 15 at 7 p.m. at The River Creek Country Club in Leesburg. Cost for the evening will be $25. We will be conducting our monthly meeting, installing our new board and celebrating the accomplishments of the past year. I truly hope that everyone will try to attend this event; it will be a great opportunity for us to relax and visit with each other. Heather M will be sending out an e-mail with more details in the next few days. We must have all reservations in a week prior to the event. Remember if you ever have any membership concerns, know of a member in need, or have a friend interested in JWCL feel free to contact me with your questions. See everyone on Tuesday! THE TREASURER’S REPORT FROM ELINOR M In the month of April the beginning checking balance was $6,531.31; checks written totaled $1,776.95 and a deposit was made for $ 2,315.00. Our end-of-April balance is $7,069.36 and our savings balance is $2,317.00.
a THANK YOU from Cheryl K and Pam S, FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE CO-CHAIRS Thank you to everyone who helped to make the 2004 Spring Shopping Expo such a success! We were able to raise over $1,400 total (compared to about $500 from last year's sale). Of the total proceeds, the raffle raised $375 specifically for Loudoun Abused Women's Shelter (LAWS). In addition, 2 boxes of canned food donations were collected for Interfaith Relief. The Spring Sale committee collected lessons learned to improve this fundraiser in the future. If you have any ideas for the Shopping Expo or other fundraising events, please pass them on. Again, thank you for everyone's contribution of time and talents.
A NOTE OF THANKS from jen S Thanks so
much to Pam S, Nicole H, Jen M, Rebecca M, Kate M, Becca A, Rosalyn J, Nayana
M, and Michelle T
for volunteering to help out with Megan’s Walk this past weekend.
A special thanks to Michelle for coordinating things in my
absence. You all helped to raise funds and awareness for a great cause! A Senior Citizens Day Update from Jen M AND Elinor M This year's Senior Citizen Day is on Friday, May 21st. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to bake for the event. We have 60 cakes being prepared so far. If you did not get a chance to sign up to bake at the last meeting, we can always use more items. Here are a few guidelines to consider when you are baking: 1. Do not frost the cakes. If it is a warm day, the frosting will melt. 2. Bake smaller portions. Many of the senior citizens live by themselves or with their spouse; a large cake may be too much. Consider cutting a full size cake in half or into quarters. 3. Try to bake/buy sugar free goods, as much of the senior population is diabetic. Splenda, a sugar-free substitute, can be used to replace sugar cup-for-cup when baking “diabetic friendly” treats. There are also recipes on-line, at: http://www.splenda.com http://www.diabetic-recipes.com/cat_cakes.htm and http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/d_08_200.htm Please drop the cakes off at Elinor M house at 212 Woodberry Rd. in Leesburg on Thursday, May 20. Anytime is fine, if no one is home, there will be a cooler on the porch. Finally, we need volunteers to work the cake walk. It will be Friday, May 21, after lunch (we are confirming the time). In the past, we have been finished by 2:30pm. Everyone that has worked this event in the past loved it- the seniors are very enthusiastic about their cakes! If you are able to work, please let Elinor M know tonight.
