A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT – Tanya

Hello Ladies! From a spud …the very face of Mr. Potato Head has become one of the most popular toys of many generations.  Just this year, Mr. Potato Head celebrated 50 years.

Like Mr. Potato Head, JWCL has been around for 50 years (celebrated in 2001).  We started small and have grown not only in size but who we are as well.  Mr. Potato Head and JWCL have many features to our face.  We both participate in community service projects, leadership, social events and camaraderie with fellow women.  (If you don’t believe me, check out Mr. Potato Heads’ resume at www.hasbropreschool.com/mrpotatohead/pl/page.history/dn/default.cfm )

We have a great year unfolding ahead of us with many new ideas to implement.  I want to encourage all of you to get involved in JWCL.   Learn about the foundation of our club (I’ll help you out with this one!); get to know your fellow clubwomen, voice your ideas and opinions and overall …Let’s have fun!  Through unity and diversity, we make JWCL what it is today and lay the groundwork for our future as a club.   See you on the 17th!   Tanya

It’s Waterford Time! – Lori & Cheryl

It’s that time of year again!  One of the most hectic and fun times in the club year…Waterford!  For all of you new members, get ready for an interesting weekend!  This year’s Waterford Fair is October 4, 5 & 6th.  We will again be selling Brunswick stew, corn muffins, baked goods & beverages.  Many people return to eat at our booth every year!!!

As many of you know, or have heard, Waterford is our most critical and profitable fundraiser.  It is also one of the few required activities for members.  Best of all, it’s a lot of fun!!  There are many ways in which you can fulfill your commitment, so don’t worry if you are unavailable that weekend.  Though we do ask you to try!  Note:  if you work the fair, you also get to attend the fair for free (normal entrance fee is $15) any time during the weekend!

Thanks to the ladies who were at the August meeting for signing up!  We request that you take at least one shift one day of the fair.  We still have openings for setup on Thursday, both shifts on Friday & Sunday.  We can also use a few helping hands with teardown. (See Workers Needed! below).  Please contact Cheryl or Lori to sign up for your shift!

We will be passing out muffin mix, details of the booth workings, and sending out the sign ups for baked goods at the September meeting.  Please make every effort possible to attend that meeting to learn about Waterford!  If you are unable to attend the September meeting, please contact Cheryl or Lori for details.  Get ready, set, BAKE!

Workers Needed!

Thursday, Initial Set Up – Need 4 people from 1:00 – 6:00 (Worst case – usually shorter)

Friday – Need 3 people from 8:30 to 1:30 & 4 from 1:00 – 6:30

Sunday – Need 4 people from 8:30 to 1:30 & 3 from 1:00 – 6:30

Tear Down – Need 2 – 3 to be at the fair at 6:00PM Sunday to help tear down the site and haul items to the storage location & do inventory (a man or two to help with the heavy stuff would be great!).

PROM DRESS CAMPAIGN – Terri

I have started collecting information about organizing a prom dress "giveaway" event in the spring. For those of you who were not at the last meeting, here's a little background. I had read a few articles about individuals and/or groups who organized an event for teenage girls to receive a free prom dress and accessories at no charge. Girls who would not otherwise be able to attend the prom due to financial reasons would be invited to the event in hope that they would be able to find a dress for their prom. The organizing group would collect item donations from stores, friends, co-workers, family and invite selected girls to the event. So far, I have talked to one woman who is in the process of planning her first event in the Hampton Roads area and got some great ideas. She is sending me examples of some flyers and other materials that she is using that I hope to get in time for our meeting next week. I hope to set up a meeting for the prom dress committee next week, so if you are interested and didn't sign the sign up sheet, just send me an email or give me a call. I think this will be so much fun!

Membership Message – Michelle

Hello Ladies,

Welcome to Fall!  I hope all of you are enjoying the cooler temperatures as much as I am.  I want to take a minute to welcome three new prospective members that attended the August JWCL meeting; Stephanie M., Heather M. and Becky T..  We were so pleased to meet you, and we look forward to getting to know you over the next several months.

As many of you know I have been working on planning a fall social at Great Country Farms in Bluemont, Virginia.  We are currently working with the owner to finalize plans, so watch for an e-mail in the next few days with all the details. The date is tentatively set as Saturday, October 26 from 4p.m. – 8p.m., and it will be a family affair.  I hope that we will have a big turn out.  It should be a great chance to get to know your fellow club women.

The Membership Committee will be meeting in mid-October to begin to make plans for the rest of the year.  This includes planning for a large recruitment event in January as well as additional social activities.  If you have ideas that you would like us to think about please contact me or a member of the committee.  Some things that are in the works are a book club, a mentor program, and a once-monthly Ladies Night Out.

Finally, remember all of you are the best recruitment tools that I have!  Please mention JWCL and all the great work we do to your friends and neighbors.  People feel most comfortable when they can attend their first meeting with someone they know.  So bring a friend to our next meeting and help us grow.  See you next week. – Michelle T.

TREASURER’S REPORT – Susan B.

Checking = $7064.27

Savings =      2307.96

Total =           9372.23

 Largest expense for the past month was our purchase of Brunswick Stew for the Waterford fair.  I’m currently working on our 501C3 status.  If you have any interest or experience in this area, I’d welcome the assistance.

BYLAW UPDATE – Lori C. & Becca A.
We will be discussing the major by law changes at our September meeting.  If you have any thoughts on the following topics, please let Becca or I know prior to the meeting.

1. Age Limit - the State Federation has removed the age limit on Juniors.  We now have the option of either establishing an age range for membership or removing the age limit.

2. If we change or eliminate the age limit, we need to make decisions on graduation.  Typically members graduated from club at the time they turned the upper age limit.  We have the option of keeping that or determining a period of service to be completed prior to the graduation.  Examples - 5 years, 10 years, etc.

Please send your thoughts.  We will provide a recommendation based on the comments received at the September meeting.  We will vote on the complete ByLaw revision at the October meeting.  The completed ByLaw changes, including reasons for the changes, will be sent out prior to the October meeting.

DISTRICT MEETING - Contact Lori C. by Friday, September 13 if you are planning on attending.   Meeting will be held on Sat, September 28 in Manassas, 9AM to 3PM; cost is $20 including lunch. Come out and meet local clubwomen and learn more about our club work in the region!  Several people have expressed interest - the more the merrier!!
